I Flew on a RARE Airbus A340-600!

The Airbus A340-600 is a stretched version of the Airbus A340 family, and is also the longest airliner ever built by the manufacturer.

German flag carrier Lufthansa was the largest operator of the -600 variant, operating as many as 24 of them. After being abruptly retired in 2020, a total of 10 of these planes were later brought back into service to meet demand for travel in summer 2022 and 2023.

In February this year, I managed to find myself a reasonable Aeroplan redemption on one of the A340-600's few routes - and jumped on it!

OMG! What a treat to have you do this review. The 600 varieties are just the gift that keeps given. So many features and unique quirks about this one. I finally flew one from HK to FRA in first a few month back and it was truly a childhood dream come true. One of the things on my list was to walk round trip from front to back and see how long it takes. It is such a wildly long plane. Aah. I think I have to do it again. Even though it was a rough and loud ride without any of today’s comforts.

We flew on the same D-AIHF Lufthansa A346 from Munich to Newark back in June 2024 and 2 things surprised me: 1) How strange are turns on the ground due to a long fuselage 2) Beautiful area on the back with lavatories downstairs. Also flew on Austrian OE-LAZ B763 parked in JFK next to gate you arrived. Small world I guess

This one is such a beauty and the Lufthansa livery makes it even more beautyfull. Love that they stull operate them with the 747’s and planning to fly with them only for this reason

The A346 was the backbone of Iberia due to its ability to land in hot and high airports, many of which are in Hispanic America. Beautiful aircraft, especially in IB's old livery. After covid they were retired and replaced by the A350-900, a smaller aircraft more comparable to an A333 (which they also fly), and that makes me wonder why they didn't go for the -1000 variety.

Strangely, despite decades of flying, Lufthansa out of Frankfurt was the first airline/airport where I had a very nice shower and detox half way thru a journey from JFK to West Africa. They also were the last time I was on a 747 in 2019 out of LHR back to JFK :(

Hi Alex, i flew on a Lufthansa A340-600 in 2012 from YVR to FRA in buisness class in the same seat as you did in this video except that the seats were very different as they were like over sized premium economy seats. They were very comfortable and lie flat seats in a 2x2x2 configuration with little privacy. The service was very good as you would expect. I enjoyed the video very much as it brought back some great memories, thanks again.

A really beautiful airplane. I've flown only on the -200, which which was also nice (to Chile), but reminding me of the original turbojet 707 as an underpowered four-holer. The 600 has those much bigger engines which I think make it look better. Lovely shots of engines and wing.
