You forgot to mention that white plastic also appears to deteriorate faster than black or colored plastic.

It’s not just this.

Glossy white typically makes something look and feel sleek. Glossy colored stuff often looks cheap. White also hides scratches better out of sunlight.

You couldn’t be more wrong. As far as modern products go, it all lies with consumer psychology. A new white products feels new, fresh and clean in contrast with an old product that feels and looks worn and roughened. It’s so you look at you AirPods (for example) and think they feel dated and due for a replacement when you see an icy white pair being advertised.

So if it gets dirty you buy a new one!

Speedrunning this short: they want their products to instantly stand out in a crowd, same reason they have such a big logo

Not to mention, white resembles cleanliness, and luxury.

I remember in the early-mid 2000s when people got robbed because of their white earphones on the subway.

There’s companies who customise these products for an extra bit of cash like colour ware. They disassemble the whole device then colour the plastics then reassemble it.

My white AirPods case also hides scratches surprisingly well

This plus the fact that they get dirty faster, and when you see how you’re stuff looks dirty compared to the new stuff it makes you want to buy a new one to look clean

Definitely true. What surprises me is that Apple never deviated from this “make everything white” approach at the beginning. Since the first iPod was a pioneering product and expensive, people listening while commuting on public transit were often the victim of grab-and-run thefts of their iPods because it was so obvious that’s what they were listening to. Considering that the first iPod debuted long after the first iMac, which started as one color, then offered five, It wasn’t like Apple did have a history of offering colorful products. In fact, the Philadelphia Museum of Art has an original iMac in it’s collection.

Then again, the whole iMac concept was about making computers affordable for everyone, as well as having every part of the computer built into one unit and adding style to otherwise unattractive products. Today’s iMac follows some of the same ideas, an attractive colorful product with the entire computer, CPU, monitor, etc., all in one (now compact and lightweight) unit. They’ve abandoned the affordable-computing-for-all mission sadly.

At the time, I didn’t have enough disposable income for such an expensive product as the brand new iPod, but since I commuted on public transit, I would not have purchased one because of the rash of thefts even if I did.
