Umpire calls a balk… was that the right call? High school baseball

yes. In contact with the rubber and the ball was in the glove. in order for the pitcher to put the ball in his hand he hast to come set or step off the mound. he's not allowed to just take the ball out of his glove because this is a movement that is not natural to the pitchers routine.

That's a perfect call. And the pitcher knew it to. He wasn't ready when he brought it hands together. It's why he quickly separated them. Thus casing the balk.

my guess is they were using multiple signs. he picked up his sign before the sequence was over. so he started to come set and then remembered he was supposed to wait for the whole sequence to end

one of the most teachable balks for youth baseball... Umps call this one all the time..

Technically, not only did he break without throwing (anywhere) but he didn’t come set long enough, usually in the range of a “one count.” Even if he somehow threw the ball from that position, I’d call him for that violation.

😢 a balk but I feel it's weak to call weak calls since he was even setting yet. In a way I wish they allow you to not balk short of relaxing the ball. It could be a lot of fun for pitchers to throw in a shoulder shrug to mess up hitters. Especially since most games are running on a bad formated pitch clock thing.
