“I’ve been playing games since video games were invented” is honestly such a flex 😂❤

As a graphic designer, I try to keep my commission art and my personal art as separate as I can. I never doodle on paper for sketches when I’m doing commissions, I just use a construction pencil and stylus in illustrator, I often try to keep my commissions as a routine process, because I really don’t want my personal art to start feeling like work.

I often hear "yeah... I'm _that_ old" thrown around but this the first time an anecdote actually hit me,
Like "Wha- there's no way he's _that_ old"

Pong wasn't just his first video game, it was the world's first video game.

I’m horrified of doing art as a career because I’ve heard for many, it feels like work to them now, like they have to do it. I’m really scared of that happening to me.

The random teammates in my OW2 lobby could be Scott???? I vow to never get mad playing video games ever again.

My best friend made a career out of art. She’s very good at it, too. She also hates it because it’s sucked much of the joy out of it for her, she doesn’t really have that hobby she loves anymore and it’s no longer a way for her to unwind very often. So I’d say be very careful, making a career out of something does mean it becomes work.

You have to remember when you make your hobby your job, is that you don't have a hobby anymore. I killed my love of writing by trying to make it sellable because the thing I did to unwind now had the same pressures and expectations my day job did.

Yeah, I feel like this too! I have so many passions-art, music, astronomy, writing- and cannot choose just one for a career. And another part of me just wants to, you know, get a normal job. 👍🏼

For me I’ve tried the regular job thing and I HATED IT I felt like I was wasting my time that I could be doing something greater with my life in the art world. So I quit and went to animation school (I’m 21 so figured this out early) and even though the work load is severe I’m talking 80 hours a week work load but I don’t have that same feeling when I’m working on art. I feel in my element and I’m excited. That’s why I chose to make a career out of art. Besides I have gaming and other hobbies to wind down with if I ever get tired.

I think that there’s a difference between doing art as a hobby, something you do to wind down, etc, and doing it as a way of means. I would like to pursue art as a career, of course I do, but I’m worried that I won’t enjoy it like I do when I’m just making a piece because I want to, not because I have to.

i’ve also taken this advice to heart: if there’s nothing else you want to do with your life- if you know that what you’re here to do is act/dance/paint/whatever- do it! if you have more stable passions that you love just as much and would be just as fulfilled by, choose the stable one.

choosing to not do art as a career was the best decision i ever made in my art life. just doing it as a hobby (with a small handful of commissions here and there) has let me loosen up with it so much. i'm less afraid of making "bad" art since i don't have that "i'm going to have to do this for a living in the future" mindset anymore, it's just made it a much more chill experience!

It's a tough one you have to really have to dedicate time to put yourself out there while creating art is a delicate balance

I love love Drawing, and I think I am going to pursue a career in it

I've loved drawing all my life, ever since I was a toddler. There are special/vocational public high schools where I live, so I decided to go to art school, because I loved it.

Having spent close to two years here, honestly, I don't wanna be a professional artist anymore. They always compare us, there's clear favoritism and they don't really teach us much. I still enjoy making my personal stuff, just not the stuff for school. But yeah.

My plan is to just do tons of art on the side and hope i can make it a side hustle. Or better yet, get filthy rich and not have to work anymore! Either way I'll never run out of motivation because i genuinely enjoy art whether it gains traction or not.
