Thanks for this video! I am currently growing mine for my cats—it will be part of a cat nip blend I am making for them! I started growing it late in summer so for this first winter I took mine inside, but come spring it will permanently stay outside. I appreciate the warning on the feet smell!! 😂😂 Yours is the first video showing me what to do with the roots. Everything else I could find was just written directions but I need to see to learn! ❤

PS for anyone curious only give your cats the valerian ROOT. I am also growing honeysuck for them for the stem (NOT the flower or leaves or berries!), silver vine, cat nip, cat mint, and some cat grass for taste. :3

Great video! I’m happy there are more gardeners like myself creating content out there! Thanks again!

I was looking for this video and didn't even know 😂 I recently purchased a bottle of Valerian and thought it was molded or old because of the smell. Now I won't throw it away. Lovely head wrap as well! 💕

Awesome information 🤓 I'm growing Valerian this season. It's looking limp from the cold weather. Hopefully, it makes it 🤩 Thanks for sharing!

Thank you for the demo of Valerian Root. Great video. I grew some and will try the tincture or tea to see if it helps me sleep a little better.

Lovely stuff - i have been growing it in the garden; hoping it will come up every year like the comfrey does! How much do I take for help with sleep?

To me Valerian smells like Spikenard, which is a very expensive and exotic essential oil from the Himalayas. As for the smell of feet, dear lady, feet don't develop a bad odor if one goes barefoot or wears only sandals. Foot odor is caused by the unnatural practice of smothering them in shoes. Musky-smelling Valerian oil can be combined with other floral oils to produce some wonderfully exotic fragrances.

You mention harvesting before it flowers. That intuitively make sense - I harvest other medicinal plants' leaves before they flower for the same reason. But I'd heard before that valerian needs to be growing at least a year before it's harvested, or else it won't build up enough potency. Has that been your experience?

Thanks for the information! Do you use the leaves for anything?

some people say green root and top greens give have the opposite effect. im not sure i believe them, its hard to suss out whats critical thinking and whats anecdotal. But the cats sure love it. And its great to mix with lions ear or lions tail, or motherswort. i might add saffron (home grown saffron, mmhmm). Cali poppy. Corn poppy petals. And i have lemon balm, but it makes things taste SO bad. Im going to call it sledgehammer sand-man. lol

Just hang dry them? Would a food dehydrator be okay?

Great info. I take formula 303 with has valerian root and passion flower in it. Whew!!!! You’re right. Smells like my husband’s dirty feet. 😂

The smell to me is like sandalwood. Maybe there were some feet in that sandalwood, it is pretty musky.
