Wrong-way driver kills 5 people, including 3 children, in Pittsburg

Five people – including three young children – were killed in a head-on crash that involved a wrong-way driver in Pittsburg early Thursday morning, the California Highway Patrol said.

My heart aches for the lives lost, especially the children and the innocent driver who was getting off the ramp probably minutes from being home.
The driver on the other hand, not so much, it sounds like they were DUI or on their phone.I just don’t comprehend HOW you confuse the exit with an on ramp when you reside in an area, it should be familiar.Its not like its the town or the city.

If mistakenly got on the wrong ramp you would see every cars is coming at you you and all of them are in the same direction except for you. You are the only one going in this direction should be the wake up call that you are in the wrong and need to get off not coming driving at a full rate of speed. You don't see all the lanes of cars all coming at you? It's busy traffic not like you got on empty stretch of highway. Got to be something wrong with your brain or eyes or both. Some kind of major impairment. Even sleepy wouldn't do this. This is like seeing the cars and still doesn't register anything to the brain. If you ever find yourself going the wrong way you pull over asap with your emergency hazards on and park on the shoulder. You don't smash into another car going full speed in a head on and not try to pull or over even slow down or brake. I can see missing a sign but missing a bunch of cars is impossible if you are not an unimpaired driver. Any normal driver if they see even 1 or 2 cars coming in their lane or even their direction on the freeway would say something is wrong and would at least move. If it was suicide just go into a water or wall or a cliff. Don't take out others. Plus so easy to just hit a tree or pole then to go on the freeway in the wrong direction. What if everybody avoided you or you didn't die? How many people have been known to go the wrong way to commit suicide? Not very common way to suicide. I am going with drugs.

CHP needs to UP their patrols big time. You never see them on that stretch of freeway. They drive like freaking maniacs on the 4 and everyone knows it. Thug alley over there with all the Hellcats and Chargers weaving in an out of traffic with limo tints and paper plates. Also, start using drones on the freeways and crack down on these lunatics.

We almost got into a wreck on Hwy 4 just over a month ago as I swerved to avoid another vehicle swerving to avoid a wreck on a freeway offramp between Antioch and Pittsburgh. Thankfully, I don't live there to drive on Hwy 4 everyday.

How does even get into the wrong way onto a freeway?
On ramps and off ramps are built to match only one direction of the surface to enter or exit from the freeway.
No one finds this bizzarre to begin with?

It's possible, but it would have to totally deliberate to do so.

And why are the kids out on the road so late at night, after midnight?
Was the driver their parent?

It's sad and frustrating that there are people who don't care enough about their lives, much less than their children. According to the news report, the adult driver with the children in the car was responsible for going the wrong way. Drugs or alcohol. There's no other logical explanation unless suicide was the motive. Too bad the driver didn't survive and suffer to pay for his colossal crime.

This is so sad!! They say when driving at night do not drive in the fast lane. When people drive the wrong way the usually stay in the fast lane, driver thinking that the fast lane is the slower lane. Something to think about!!

East bay drivers are something else. Every time I go there there’s always crazy drivers, doing 100mph, swerving, cutoffs, and many other things. Just last night there was a wrong way driver going straight for us in Oakland. And someone almost hit me cause they cut me off inches from my bumper all in the same night.
