Stunning new images emerge of intensifying California wildfires

Devastating wildfires are tearing across Los Angeles at frightening speeds. The governor has now declared a state of emergency as thousands have been forced to evacuate. NBC’s Liz Kreutz reports for TODAY.

I didn't suffer a loss but I feel for these people. I bought nice little home on a couple acres in the Sierra foothills near Bass Lake to retire in back in 2017 but almost lost it during the Lake fire in 2020. After having to evacuate for 11 days and not know for the first few if my house or my neighbors homes were still standing I decided I need to find another location before I got to old. I sold it and ended up moving abroad to start a new little retirement ranch where fire is not an issue..

LA Mayor is out of the country, part of an official government delegation that is attending the inauguration of the new President of Ghana. And Gov Newsom chose to spend $24 billion on homeless programs while cutting back funds for wildland brush management (that's "Raking" which is a real term in Vegetation Management). California government has failed its people and has failed its stewardship of the environment.

This brings back flashbacks from evacuating the Maui fires and moving back to the mainland afterwards. Thankfully I did not lose my home but my heart goes out to California residents who are going through this terrifying and devastating situation. Sometimes I wonder if a warning siren had gone off when the fires were erupting, how many lives could have been saved in Maui. I don’t mean to make this about Maui. I think sirens like the ones used for tornados should be mandatory in areas that are prone to fires. I’m not from Cali so I’m not certain if that’s already protocol or not. I pray for everyone’s safety and the safety of animals and pets and all first responders out there.

The mayor of LA slashed the budget of the LAFD by millions to fund her DEI projects while the remaining budget was to hire people in the department for their diversity rather than their ability to fight fires and then was on a holiday in Ghana when the fires started. Splendid governance.
