I am Ghanaian living in america and my parents do this. and they wonder why I don’t talk to them. and they wonder why they can never find their kitchen knives. and they wonder why the medicicine cabinet is always empty.

There's nothing wrong with being strict as long as you are fairminded, balance it with fun & cuddles, make necessary adjustments according to age and circumstances, and don't waffle on the rules...no extremes. Extremes such as micromanaging the small stuff and ignoring the major stuff, BALANCE. I am strict and I keep my rules simple, my nieces and nephews respected this, but there was always time for play and fun. I took them to San Diego ZOO, Wild animal-park (now called Safari Park), Seaworld, Seaport Village, Balboa Park, Bellmont Park, Mission Beach, Cultural Center, Museums, plays, shopping, swapmeets, movies, and we baked cookies from scratch at home.

This type of parenting i disagree with. My parents were cery authoritative and strict, due to this i often kept things to myself, never vunerable with them, always snuck out and did things behind their back, always punished over minute things etc. But funnily whenever sleeping over my extended family they were often very relaxed with me and it has positive effects on me as o always did my tasks without any issues.

For all those saying this is abuse it it not. In Ghana our parents use the cane to correct us, so you won’t dare to fall out of line to be corrected again . Not all Ghanaian parents are like this tho
