That’s the figure reported by the Wall Street Journal as an estimate of the total number of casualties suffered by both sides on the battlefield during 1000 days of war between Russia and Ukraine. Amid changes in the leadership of both the US government and the NATO military alliance, the milestone was reached at a time of uncertainty in the days which followed, a spiral of escalatory claims and counterclaims fueled the fears of a global nuclear conflict.

Russia has threatened to use its new hypersonic missiles against Ukrainian decision making centers, and newly unleashed Ukraine continues to make use of American and European long range missiles inside Russia. Both sides are now maneuvering for position ahead of January 20, when a new president, armed with his peace plan, enters the White House, and Donald Trump’s appointment of a special envoy for Ukraine and Russia completes the teamsheet of names that he wants to help him end the conflict.
