How to Grow Microgreens | Ask This Old House

Ask This Old House landscape designer Jenn Nawada learns how to grow and harvest microgreens.

Time: 7 days

Cost: $10-20

Skill Level: Easy

Shopping List:

Steps:
1. Some seeds require you to pre-soak a handful of seeds to promote early germination (follow directions on the seed packet). If you’re worried about bacteria spreading from one seed to the rest, you can add a little hydrogen peroxide to the water.
2. After the presoaking is complete, rinse and drain the seeds in a colander.
3. Pour organic soil into plastic container and fill it up half way.
4. Push soil down evenly with the bottom of a second plastic container.
5. Water the soil thoroughly.
6. Spread the seed densely over the top of the soil.
7. Use a spray bottle (rather than your fingers) to help spread the seeds evenly.
8. Cover the seed with a plastic container and place it in a warm space away from sunlight to germinate.
9. In 3-4 days once the seeds have sprouted, remove the cover and bring them to a sunny area.
10. By 7-10 days, the microgreens should be ready to harvest.
11. Sterilize a pair of scissors with hydrogen peroxide and cut the microgreen close to the soil, but do not pull up any soil in the process.
12. Compost the excess soil and recycle or reuse the plastic container.
13. Microgreens can be stored for up to a week in the refrigerator.

First microgreen video I've seen that mentions problems with e-coli and how to prevent it. Thanks!

This is by far one of the most educational and short videos out there. Way to Go!

Jeez, people, chill! Those folks in the video aren’t running for the Academy Awards! This was an extremely useful video about everything having to do with micro greens, from how to sprout them to how to store them. Just what I needed. Thanks, This Old House.

To all those criticizing the scripted dialogue....this was not made to entertain you, it was made to provide useful information that is clear and complete. An unscripted delivery would have taken more time, would have omissions of important details, and would have left the audience with questions. I'll always prefer a well-scripted delivery over a rambling fool digressing onto irrelevant topics....sort of like those who digressed from being students wanting to learn to petty critics looking for things to complain about.

Instead of criticizing their "acting skills" pay attention to the FREE INFORMATION they are sharing with you... that's the main issue with people nowadays... it's easy to stomp on everyone's head... but how about sharing something constructive without trying to be cinematographic critics?
*RANT OVER*
Thank you for sharing this video, I had been looking to boost my smoothies with microgreens instead of powders but I was affraid it would take a lot of space and time

Just started my own microgreens business. It's delicious to eat but not easy to sell. Still love it. 😀

I love how they exclude that after time it was concluded that growing these mini farms w/ sprout type seeds grows mold.

Awesome video! Thanks for sharing. I have just started growing my own microgreens at home as well. I have just purchased Hemp Grow Mat as it seemed to have great reviews and I loved the idea of no soil. So far, so good. Have you used Terrafibre Hemp Grow Mats before?

Good video. Thanks! Can the sprouts be done without soil medium? (like alfalfa?).
