Ian is very old, but he could play the role as Christopher Lee did, for Saruman.
Not traveling but staying home.
They could hire in replacement the actor that is in the ROP series. I think he plays his part pretty well. One of the few good things of the series

Consider this. - We can glean a little more about the hunt for Gollum from Appendix B, "The Tale of Years".
2944: Gollum leaves the Mountains and begins his search for the 'thief' of the Ring.
2951: Sauron declares himself openly...
Gollum turns towards Mordor... Elrond reveals to 'Estel' his true name and ancestry, and delivers to him the shards of Narsil. Arwen, newly returned from Lórien, meets Aragorn in the woods of Imladris. Aragorn goes out into the Wild.
2977: Bain son of Bard becomes king of Dale.
2980: About this time Gollum reaches the confines of Mordor and becomes acquainted with Shelob.

3001: The guard on the Shire is doubled. Gandalf seeks for news of Gollum and calls on the help of Aragorn.
3007: Brand son of Bain becomes king in Dale. Death of Gilraen, Aragorn's mother.
3009: Gandalf and Aragorn renew their hunt for Gollum at intervals during the next eight years, searching in the vales of Anduin, Mirkwood, and Rhovanion to the confines of Mordor. At some time during these years Gollum himself ventured into Mordor, and was captured by Sauron.
3017: Gollum is released from Mordor.
He is taken by Aragorn in the Dead Marshes, and brought to Thranduil in Mirkwood.

If the film is going to conform to the continuity of the Peter Jackson films then the above timeline would likely be significantly compressed, with the bulk of it taking place in just a few, short years (at most). FOTR-EE gives the year of Bilbo's eleventy-first birthday as 3000 (Third Age), with the Council of Elrond seemingly taking place on 25
October, 3001. This also means that the Quest of Erebor took place in the year 2940 instead of 2941, and places Aragorn's year of birth at either 2914 or 2915 (depending on whether he was 87 or 88 when the Ring was unmade).

If you see how action always followed the lineage of Beren and Lúthien, and Eärendil it makes sense why they did Arwen and they needed to do it to give Aragorn something to grow from on screen. And it was the best way to also showcase more of the nature of elves and the Long Defeat and so forth. I had many great ideas over the years to blend her presence with Glorfindel. React to CutterOne explain from his experience in the TV business regarding the changes in the movies from the books. He’s a he great guy.

Christopher Lee's Saruman was pretty special too. Smaller role, obviously, but he nailed it. We got super lucky with the wizards (let's pretend Radagast in the Hobbit didn't happen).

It's not a question if Ian would come back for Gandalf, he already has been approached by Andy Serkis and he said he would but the script has not been completed yet and he said they better hurry! Yippee!

Did you know that book!Gandalf have the long beard but NOT the mustache?? After Ian's Gandalf, that's impossible to imagine!

If Ian McKellen is able to join in again as Gandalf, I hope they have stunt doubles for him or just a way for him to be somewhat safe during production. Tolkein's world is full of battles and adventures, and it seems like the sort of production where it's better to be younger and more athletic. Even just riding a horse is dangerous, even if you've spent years around horses.

nobody can play gandalf except ian mckellen. he has absolutely brought the character to life. one of the thing i hate most in films is when someone else plays an existing role and tried to put 'thier own spin' on the character. No, we love that character as he was, play him like that, just like that. as an actor your job is to be that person, not yourself.
