Small, young loofah are edible like squash! Also, with that frame grow an Italian squash called Trombolino. Young green fruit like summer squash but continue to grow and the skin thickens like winter squash. All the seeds are in a ball near the flower end!

I’ll never forget arguing with a pharmacist as a kid who had these in a new display in store. When I asked about the sign they’d written and said it wasn’t accurate he tried to tell us (with a scoff and a smug hah hah ha), that ha! silly girl, these were not a plant! You can’t make them or grow them. He said they washed up out of the sea like a sponge. He’s seen them swimming around before they shed and die. I genuinely think he believed they were like the corpse of some fantastic living plant/sea creature. And I wonder sometimes if he remembers that, prays to god we don’t and occasionally feels like a proper knob head 😂

I can’t peel mine! I’ve tried at various stages of growth and the skin will not come off. I threw so many out last year.
