World Health Organization (WHO) director-general Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus started Monday's briefing by reiterating the importance of a "slow steady" lifting of COVID-19 lockdowns, saying that there has been huge success in slowing the spread of COVID-19 and ultimately saving lives.
However, it's import to slowly lift lockdowns while keeping a vigilant eye on the virus so the control measures can be quickly implemented if an upswing in cases is identified, he added.
He also commented on the recent resurgence of cases in South Korea, Germany and Wuhan, China after those regions started easing lockdown restrictions, saying that countries have to follow WHO guidance in reopening their economies.
Dr. Tedros also said that WHO has published further guidance for countries starting to reopen their economies, focusing on determining if the epidemic is under control, whether public health surveillance systems are able to detect and identify a resurgence of cases, and if the healthcare systems are able to cope in case of a resurgence.
He also said that WHO has released new modelling on HIV, highlighting the importance of taking immediate steps to minimize interruptions of health services and supplies of antiretroviral drugs during the pandemic.
WHO's worst-case scenario, a six-month disruption of antiretroviral drugs, suggests that there could be 500,000 extra deaths from AIDS-related illnesses over the next year.
As of Monday, there were more than four million cases of COVID-19 reported worldwide, with over 280,000 deaths.
