Hi everyone, Polaris Ranger or John Deere Gator, which do you prefer for farm work?

We live on the welbeck estate, all the keepers use polaris and seem very pleased. They also made the switch from the gator some time ago. We have an incredibly old mule as sadly not the budget at this time, but does the job for general sheeping

We've got a Kubota RTV900 approaching 2000 hours and it's been fantastic. When we change it, maybe this year we'll definitely be having another Kubota.

How does a Can-Am compare to these two? We picked up one back in the summer and love it but always feel that there should be a Medium range as there is a big gap between L & H

Olly, seen both sides of this coin, im ex JD dealer worker, Gators are good but chew belts (even more if washer is removed to make them 50kph) and prop shafts go and are expensive, they hold there value well, were i work now are Polaris dealers, they go very well but dont have the same following as JD's but they are getting popular in our area and getting repeat sales for up grades, even taking out the odd JD

We had all the same problems with our gator. Needs a new belt every year. Steering rack has gone once and is on the way out again. Overheats frequently in muddy or snowy terrain. The hand break has gone out once and is becoming unreliable again. It's in the shop nearly as often as its on the farm. Totally unacceptable for a working farm.

You will find the ranger's 4wd system is set up wrong, when you switch the 4wd on the diff remains engaged all the time so when you turn there is excessive pressure put on the drive shafts and steering bushes, mine is 3 years old and has had numerous new drive shafts. The diff should be separately switched as a last resort after 4wd is engaged not the other way about. Should be the same as the tractors. The hand brake is non existant, when put in park on steeper ground it locks up transmission and is impossible to get out of park because hand brake is crap. Polaris has a long way to go to improve a reasonable machine.

What don't you like about the Polaris? Not sure you mentioned any dislikes!

John Deere is over priced actually crazy high and in my opinion Polaris is also overpriced. I found a UTV that fit my needs perfectly for less than half the price with more standard options.
