I know this is a late message but you said something that struck me. I was telling my friend about presenters on youtube who do reviews on movies or any topic really but here I am discussing movies. I attempted to watch a movie based (loosely) on a Dickens novel. I wanted to watch reviews and what I found was reviewers who said that they weren't familiar with the previous adaptions or the book. They did not even bother to research their subject and then they get up there and want me to listen???? This is why I love your channel and have so much respect for you. You do the work. You do the research. You are informed so I will be informed. I don't know why you don't have a million subscribers yet. I am so glad I discovered your channel (and you!!).

Hi Nicole, I’m so glad how to have found your channel. I really admire the breadth Of your reading. I love Jane Austin and I have much experience with reading because I started my channel on my 70th birthday. I have not read Vanity Fair or tale of two cities. I had better hurry up.
May I suggest Georgette Heyer’s mystery novels. They are more of a romantic suspense kind of novel but I heard footsteps in the dark was a really good book and maybe not as sweet as her other books. I also read envious Casca. My reading plans are similar to yours and that I love to find new books. I don’t read to learn as much as I do to escape and Get through this thing we call life. Sending you much aloha from Hawaii. I’ve subscribed

"Planning is the favorite part of my reading process." I relate to this so much! It's fun to make an event of reading. I hope it's a wonderful Jane Austen July for you!

It's a few years since I last read it but "Longbourn" by Jo Baker is a retelling of P&P from the POV of the servants which I really enjoyed. Pride & Prejudice & Zombies is really clever in the way it takes the original text and veers off - though the plot isn't great

I have found planning is one of my favourite aspects of reading as well. Research is really great! It is one of my favourite aspects as well.

I really loved Vanity Fair, it got a tad repetitive near the end but I enjoyed the story and tone well.

I am always glad to find a fan of the 2005 Pride and Prejudice. Excited for Jane Austen July again!

Reading with purpose and meaning… yes! I am a mood reader but this can most definitely trip me up but I’m someone who will dnf a book if it isn’t for me. As you said, too many books to get to in this short life. Since joining booktube, I’ve been so much more intentional than usual with my reading because of readathons, buddy reads etc. This has meant I’ve read some amazing books that lazy me on my own might not have attempted. I never set strict tbrs because this often makes me miserable when I feel restricted, but I love making lists and researching what I might read. It is so pleasurable! I absolutely loved hearing your process of picking your reads, particularly how you are complimenting Jane Austen’s letters with the Lucy Worsley book, which I really enjoyed a couple of years ago. I was considering Georgette Heyer but, like you, I am not sure if her work is for me. Great plans!

Ros at Scallydandling about the Books is reading A Fine Brush on Ivory by Richard Jenkyns. It looks good and I have ordered that one. Just bringing it to your attention! Planning is an interesting approach. I am very much a spontaneous, this is what I feel like now type of person but then I am not making videos !🤣

Hi, Nicole, I also love planning for the same reasons you state. I love the John Mullans book and will be reading the oxford edition of Sense and Sensibility with introduction and notes by John Mullan this year. Among other things, I will be reading the original 1801 version of Edgeworth's Belinda. I've only read one Heyer book, but have An Infamous Army (which includes a description of the Battle of Waterloo) on a future JAJ TBR. You may want to research Fanny Burney's nonfiction essay "Brief Reflections Relative to the Emigrant French Clergy" and Constance Hill's Juniper Hall about Burney and the expatriates in England during the French Revolution. Again on my future TBRs. Finally, you mentioned reading a play. Lover's Vows by Mrs. Inchbald is the play in Mansfield Park and JA played Mrs. Candor in a home production of Sheridan's The School for Scandal. Have a great JAJ!

I love that you plan ahead. I do in some rudimentary way, though not really themed as much as you do. I try to vary my genre and topic from book to book to keep me going but I don't try to keep them theme for fear of getting bored. After listening to this video in preparation for Jane Austen July, I may try to keep to a theme. One of the books I picked up in plans to read this year was John Mullen's book, What Matters in Austen. I already finished a non-fiction book, Jane Austen's England. I picked it up two years ago and hadn't gotten around to finishing it. A good read but not nearly as good as Our Tempestuous Day. Would definitely recommend! I also have spent many years avoiding Georgette Heyer. A bit of a book snob with Regency Fiction and have avoided them. Many romances for this period seem to have a modern feel with them dressed-up in period clothing. I finally caved in a bought one recommend by Kate Howe called Arabella. The plot sounded fun and am hoping its not too sugary as you put it. All this to say I too may reading the book by John Mullen (who has awesome lectures! on Youtube) and the Georgette Heyer book in July, inspired by this video. Thanks!

I'm also planning on reading _Selected Letters_ and I love the idea of 'pairing' it with _Jane Austen at Home._ 🤓 Like you, I have also read _Jane Austen at Home_ but I might just give it a reread, too. 📚 Thanks for the inspiration! ❤️

I'm a planner, too, and I love planning and making lists for everything. Oh, I'm reading that same edition of her letters, too! I've ordered Jane Austen at Home, so I hope to have it in time.

I spend the most time on my plans for books on trips, when I won't have the opportunity to impulse-swipe a different book (or 3) from my shelf...such momentous decisions! Ha :)

Im only starting to plan my reading but I find it is helping me be more realistic about what I can actually get read and also that I get a better balance between the kinds of books. I’ll probably be a planning convert yet! I considered Vanity Fair for July but decided I’d probably save for August as I’ll have too much else reading to do! There really is so much to choose from for historical fiction. I might read a few of Cowpers poems as well. Looking forward to what you think of Georgette Heyer if you do read her, and I’ve adored the Tracey Chevalier I’ve read so far 😊

I am reading Lady Susan, Mansfield Park and A Tale of Two Cities. All of which I have never read. I have several nonfiction picked out but I need to make a choice on those and I am not sure yet what I will watch.

I love planning out PARTS of my reading, but I can't plan for everything or I feel like I'm being bossed around and I get rebellious! 😂
I thoroughly enjoyed Rosamunde Pike's version of Pride and Prejudice on audio!
I'm not a huge fan of Heyer. I think that might be almost sacrilegious talk here on BookTube, but I just don't care for her stories.
I have a book of essays of Samuel Johnson I was considering reading.
I won't be watching any adaptations, modern or otherwise. They never live up to my mind's eye version.
I have some plans, but I'm very reliant on the library and the one in my area is quite small, so I don't know how many I will be able to get.

Ooh! If you're interested in some good romantic but not sugary fiction from 20th century, our May of the Moderns entries had some great contenders! (I've got a playlist of everyone's videos on my channel!) 😊
