Thanks for your review. I read this 4th novel in the Heechee series when it was first published. I don't know if you have read 'Gateway' (which is widely regarded as a classic in SF), or 'Beyond The Blue Event Horizon' (the first sequel), which is written in a different style and introduces the core ideas that continue through the 3rd and 4th books. I don't know if Pohl had a contract to produce the 4th book, or went back to the series to tie together several ideas he was interested in at that time. Usually the reputation of the novels declines from 'Gateway' onwards, with 'BTBEH' being by far the strongest of the follow up books. If you are interested in reading more Pohl, I recommend 'Man Plus', 'Jem' and Pohl's collaboration with Cyril Kornbluth 'The Space Merchants'.
