It'd be fun to see if Josephine could ID shoes blindfolded. By smell or touch or sound. She has pointe shoe superpowers!

I remember my 70 year old grandad told me about ballet when I was about 5 and he told me that it was a wood block inside of a pointe shoe! I believed it ever since until I started watching your channel ahahaha

the biggest myth for me would be "There is no reason for/you cannot be doing or starting ballet at an older age". We know it's total bs, if you don't dream big, you can aaalways do it for fun. But people still think that it makes no sense to start as an adult.

Myth #3: Pointe shoes will ruin your feet
Re: padding options
How long has padding been a thing? I remember having lamb's wool but being told that by the end of first-level pointe I shouldn't *need* padding. A tiny bit of lamb's wool or folded kleenex in the toe to absorb sweat was acceptable, as was taping over blisters, and it was like a competition between class members to see who could get rid of everything else the fastest.
Edited to add: we also expected our feet to hurt all the time. I'd much rather be learning now, having shoes that FIT instead of just going "OUCH! oh well" every lesson.

Question on #5! Years ago in college, I did a presentation on pointe shoes for my dance history class. The biggest thing I learned was you should not go en pointe until your growth plates are closed, is this still true; or, as you said in the video, it just depends on the dancer?

❤️ the video especially the age part. I am glad the shift is going towards whether the dancer is ready physically instead of going by age.

As someone who hasn’t been en pointe since I was 12 and is now……mature 👀 & wanting to get back to barre, are there any shoes you would recommend? Do you do fittings for people starting over?
Thank you, I love your channel! 😄💕

I'm going back 40 years here, but when I was training in classical ballet I did go en pointe by the age of 10. The thing is though, and I would assume it's the same today, it wasn't me dictating that, "well I want to go en point now" and my ballet teacher just going, 'sure, no problem". It was quite an extensive lot of different tests that I went through before it was deemed physically safe for me to first go onto demi pointe and then en pointe. From memory they checked everything from technique to posture, to turn out, to core strength, ankle strength, leg strength, hip and knee alignment, actual anatomy of the feet, and so on. Yeah it was a whole entire process to go through, and then I was en point for just under 2 years before the program I was in was defunded (it was a really awesome program that helped underprivileged and disadvantaged kids to access professional ballet training) and then I stopped ballet due to financial constraints (hashtag 'random life story stuff').

Your point (lol) about the shoes ruining feet is a very good one for me to hear. My 6yr old daughter began ballet this year and I've been wondering about her dancing En Pointe, should she take it that far. I worry about the demands of dance, should she be serious about it, adversely affecting her body. This is very encouraging to hear, as I very much want all my kids to pursue their passions <3

I was 19 when I went up en pointe for the first time. I had been dancing for years prior.

Hi Josephine! I would love it if you did a review on the new Nokolay and RP pointe shoes models!! I'm specially interested in the "En l'air" by RP.

I really want to see fitting for flat feet. It's super hard doing pointe with flat feet (coming from experience) so idk if you have any tips, suggestions, or stuff like that? thanks!

I went on pointe at 31 in the 90’s, and it was the right time for me. Unfortunately the first dance store I went to had a terrible fitter, it took a while to find a store with a good fitter (alas that store is no more).

Yes, no matter how much I tell them, my friends still think pointe shoes are made of wood and that we live in a tutu

Not dure if you have or not, but I'd love to see you react on Center Stage pointe shoe prep scene and talk us through.

I don't dance but i love watching ballet and honestly Center Stage was the first ballet movie that I liked. Now I'm addicted to watch ballet performances.

Adult beginners can't go on pointe. I hear this A LOT, but I started doing pre-pointe as a beginner. I think there's this thought that you have to be a competent dancer to just get up on pointe but the classes I did were fine. I never did turns etc but it was still cool enough
