i know there's stories out there painting the walrus class as a pretty capable diesel boat yet i never learned much about them.
got myself a snack, a drink. and ready to enjoy this subbrief!

My main takeaway from this video is that we need to launch more harpoons from subs so the crabs can have more little homes

Me: I had no idea the Dutch even had submarines.*
Royal Netherlands Navy, cruising through a NATO exercise undetected: Why, thank you. :)

*Let alone ones this badass. What a brilliant video - thank you from the UK.

My father is a retired Dutch Navy veteran. In 2000-2001 he was posted at the Dutch Embassy in Abu Dhabi, and I remember him arranging for me and my younger brother to take a tour of one of the Walrus submarines that had made port there. Watching this video brought back memories of seeing the Con, berths and Torpedo room. I distinctly remember the crew letting us peer through the periscope. It was a fantastic experience that I'm sure I'll never forget.

I hope to see more videos from you about the Dutch Navy. Despite its rather small size, our surface fleet is very modern and boasts capabilities navies around the world would be envious of. I'd love to hear your analysis on those newer ships!

Aaron, my compliments for this awesome video, as a dutchman it makes me proud of our very modest navy to hear it spoken of so highly by someone with your experience and knowledge

One thing i would like to add, as of april 1st (sadly, not a joke), the latest news on replacing the walrus-class is that the selection process has once again been delayed. Planning now is to have the requirements finished and out the door by years end, after which DCNS/Damen/Thysenkrupp get to respond. The expectations are that any new boats will enter service somewhere in the 2035-38 timeframe, forcing the Walrus-class to again extend its lifetime. In order to achieve this, one and quite possible a second boat will be taken out of commission to serve as a parts donor to keep the final two boats operational until the new ones are ready, leaving the Royal Netherlands Navy with just two operational submarines from the late 20s to the late 30s.

Personally im quite frustrated by this turn of events, as it means our submarine capabilities will lag behind considerably during a time in which global tensions are nearing cold-war levels again, and our men and women on these boats (and those left boat-less) will not have the equipment they should have, no disrespect meant to the walrus-class boats off course.

Nothing on how a Walrus class sub 'sank' the USS Theodore Roosevelt and 8 escort ships in 1999?

As an ex Walrus class Sonar operator /Teamleader, I enjoyed this. There where only two Zwaardvis class built though. Two ”improved" Zwaardvis class where built for Taiwan. The controlroom picture of the Dolfijn is before modernization. The Flank array was very useless before modernization, and definitely use the towed array on operations. Torpedo loading was straight in to the torpedo room, from the torpedo loading hatch. Blue torpedoes are for tube testing(no war head or electronics) will run for a couple seconds, orange are for testing(empty inside) and the yellow is a test weight. The real deal is green and excercise would be green with orange.

Nice to hear a proper briefing about these four beauties, it made me almost blush being dutch with so much praise! Newsflash : defence budgets in the Netherlands are up 40%, and one of the changes in theWalrus-replacement program is the next subs will have cruise missiles and will be A-quality instead of 'B'-quality was told yesterday in the Defense-nota 2022 so hold on to your flippers because that excludes the Type 212D and pushes forward the A-26 Oceanic even more because that is one more American system for the French to deal with in their quite noisy shorten Barracuda. Hoping for that big beautiful Saab / Damen pimped out A-26NL Oceanic creating a noiseless black hole in the Barents Sea and some MARSOF on board.

yes, that's Den Helder. And they're old photos, seeing the ships in port (both number and class, most of them are retired now).
The Zwaardvis class only ever had 2 hulls commissioned into the Dutch navy. The other 2 were built for the Republic of China.

I remember when the Walrus was new. Was a major event when they were commissioned, and the old Dolfijn class were slated for retirement.

Just a remark: Zwaardvis means swordfish. In Dutch the w is not silent. That might help you pronouncing the name should it feature again in next videos.
As usual, you've done excellent work again.

IIRC the distress beacons were built by a small electronics company in Cheltenham UK
The X configuration allegedly allows them to sit quietly on the bottom with minimal risk to the fins.

the fact that the submarine was invented in the netherlands makes me proud! Also Zwaardvish means swordfish

I love the Nerf ammo color scheme on these Dutch torpedoes! I wonder if it was accidental ... ;-)

Cool one !! I used to work at RDM submarines. In the late nineties as an aprentice welder. Sadly close to the end of this quite unique company but it was a great place to learn my craft.

Thx for this great episode! Hearing you speak so positively about the sub, as well as the crews, makes me proud to be born and raised in Den Helder! In fact, I still live there... During one of the naval days there I got the chance to visit the interior as well. I was very excited! I really like your channel, keep it up!

@9:16 x-rudder "it takes a computer to do that..."

While the Walrus class no doubt used a computer, its not necessary. V-tailed aircraft have long used what is called a "mixer" that mechanically takes the input from stick and rudder and translates them into movements for the angled surfaces.

USS Philadelphia SSN-690 was the first 88 launched, think it was due to a union strike. Also, did PCO ops with the Aussies; officers were extremely impressive, doing solutions before the FTs were done.
