FKMD knives ERT Rescue knife Review. A compact first response rescue knife review, the FOX KNIVES FKMD ERT Rescue Knife. Review. If you are working in rope access; search and rescue; caver or mountain rescue, you may at some stage had to reach for a knife to cut a tape or rope that was impossible to untie or to cut someone free after securing them to allowing the injured/or other to be lowered to the ground.
The ERT rescue knife from Fox Knives is a compact knife with one handed operation that can be clipped to a carabiner, sporting deadly sharp serrations is almost a must.
Ok so after over 20 years of caving which involved some S and R, and expeditions; working during student days in rope access, I can say that carrying a good sharp knife with rope cutting ability on my harness was/ is a must.
Without a doubt the quickest way to cut a rope is with a serrated blade. But the design of serrated blades are not all the same.
Fox Knives Military Division (FKMD) /FOX knives, ERT Rescue knife is one such knife. There are several ways of attachment: such as the dedicated cradle or holster, fitted with a TEK LOK type fully adjustable belt clip; the included plastic clip for Molle carry (you need to remove the TEK LOK in order to do this); an ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) carabiner hole-super tough plastic; and 420J stainless belt clip; makes this small compact knife easily carried. Personally I'd remove the belt clip as then I could holster the ERT any way into the cradle- but that's just me.
Not all serrated blades have the same cutting capacity. The serrations on the ERT feature 1 wide deep concave cutting surface followed by 2 narrow but wide cutting surfaces, very effective on modern nylon ropes commonly found in caving climbing; amongst rope access equipment along with search and rescue gear.
This pattern of serrations also features on the FKMD Spartan Leonida Combat Survival knife which I have extensively reviewed (although on the Spartan, the serrations follow a curved profile for even better cutting power).
There's even a Philips head and flat head screw drivers, plus, strangely a bottle opener!
All metalic parts are stainless except the brass pivot washers. Blade steel Bohler N690 stainless. This gives the FKMD ERT good corrosion resistance as well.
Going bush is not just about camping and hiking, as you might be: caving, climbing, canyoning or involved in search and rescue. The FKMD ERT also sports a glass breaker so can be used to provide egress from vehicles or entry into vehicles.
Maybe the FKMD ERT Rescue knife is right for you?
Made in Italy
