How to give effective criticism?

0:46 1. Be cool [Calm & Collected]
- No anger ot sarcasm
- Keep your emotions in check

1:10 2. Make a Criticism Sandwich
- Compliment > Critisicm > Compliment

2:16 3. Be Specific
- Compl. > Specific Criticism > Compl.

2:49 4. Criticise the action, not the person
- We'll have bad days and bad habits,
that's don't make us BAD

3:28 5. Use Diplomatic Language
- "Perhaps if..."
- "It seems to me..."
- "I'm feeling that this could be just a
little more..."

3:56 6. Follow Up
- "How about meeting up the next
week, to see how your changes are
coming along", schedule a day for
practice"

*The Biggest part of delivering effective criticism is ensuring that the recipient doesn't get defensive (putting up a wall up).

I would appreaciate it, if you like it. :)

I really thought that in putting a note at the beginning acknowledging the messy bookshelf and saying it had already been cleaned up, I could preempt comments about my messy bookshelf. In this I was wrong. Because, internet.

It's very true, what he mentioned about positivity. Just by talking in a calm and positive voice will make the person being critiqued be open to ideas and feel as if they are being helped rather than being shut down and belittled.

These videos are gold. The zooming in and out to keep attention on what you're saying, is genius. Hope you keep them coming.

Unfortunately the best way to critique someone is to not do it at all. But if one must absolutely do it, you have some good points.

All good points. The only one I'd add is #7 know when you should and shouldn't give criticism.

I think another good tip for giving criticism with the compliments is to use the phrase "what went well..." then "even better if..." it is far easier to digest as the person taking the criticism. Hopefully that helps someone!

I did not even notice the bookshelf until the annotation, now I can't unsee it! lol, at least you could argue that it is a well used book shelf, not one with books just for decoration!
