Cooks have an important job, but they lack the constant training in Battle drills that infantrymen practice every day. While a cook could be used to perform some basic infantry tasks, they lack the muscle memory of constant practice.

Every soldier's a rifleman, not every soldier's an infantryman and that's an important distinction. I'm sure if an SO handed a cook an M16 and ordered them to do some target shooting they'd do a damn good job, and in a situation where they may be forced to defend themself or the facility they're stationed at that decent standard of proficiency with firearms that they gained in basic will be invaluable, but I wouldn't want them on the front line attacking a position, that's a whole other kettle of fish and is absolutely best left to those specifically trained as infantry.

Honestly, never endanger your cooks. They hold up moral more than you think. If they are good cooks, they can make the infantry they support more efficient than you will believe.

In the battle of the bulge an anti tank company took such heavy casualties that an acquaintance of mine, who was a cook was put on a gun team. He ended up being the only survivor of the team and fired the gun until he ran out of ammo. Everybody should be able to man the line.

As an army cook I can 100% confirm, you don't have enough time to feed a lot of hungry men and women and practice at the same time
