China’s top diplomat urges US to ‘avoid misjudgment’ as Blinken trip postponed over balloon issue

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has postponed his planned trip to China after the United States detected a suspected Chinese surveillance balloon over its territory. Beijing described the balloon as an “unmanned airship employed for civilian purposes” that had accidentally deviated from its planned course. China’s top diplomat Wang Yi called for both sides to “avoid misjudgment” over the incident. Blinken also said on February 3, 2023, that he still plans to visit Beijing when conditions allow.

It really doesn't make much sense for China to send a balloon that does what its satellites can do but worst. It probably is for civilian use and was unfortunate to have been blown off course, though the second balloon might not have been due to a lack of satellite coverage over SA.

Even with agreements signed, there is no guarantee that America will honour its commitments. US credibility has reached a new low and it will take a lot to convince me that there's a change of attitude; just a waste of China's time anyway.
