At 1:42 in the video, the axis definition is misleading. Assuming if I push the device in the X or Z direction I would read a positive acceleration, the Y direction is being pushed up by ground reaction, and thus should read negative on 'y'. It is a common misunderstanding to confuse gravity with what an accelerometer senses. yes, gravity pulls objects down, and if not resisted by anything an object will be in free fall, effectively accelerating but an accelerometer will read 0. As soon as freefall is resisted, the accelerometer will observed an upwards acceleration (not down!).
An accelerometer does not sense gravity, it senses acceleration. Gravity just puts an offset on the observed acceleration.
