A park ranger told me they had a really hard time keeping bears out of the trash at the tourist center because “our smartest bears are a lot more clever than our dumbest tourists.”

Animals are much smarter than we give them credit for. Eagles knock goats from cliffs, knowing the fall will kill them. Wolves will run deer and elk into rivers, knowing the icy waters will make them easier to catch. Monkeys will use sticks to collect termites from inside their mounds. Crows will drop pebbles into a partially filled jar to raise the water level and drink. Elephants, whales, dolphins, even pigs... Their memories and problem solving abilities are astounding. Don't underestimate nature.

One night in Yosemite we watched a momma bear push two cubs to go up a tree and then vocalize to them until they crawled out onto the branch other campers had packs hanging from. The cubs dropped the packs to mom, she called them down then dragged the packs to the edge of the firelight. She sat with a cub on either side tearing open the packs and handing things alternately to each cub. Very hard not to anthropomorphize that scene.

mama got skills! I learned something from her too. If I was that homeowner I wouldn't even be mad, she earned that birdseed!

This is how our backpacking group was robbed of some of the food that we were carrying. Two hikers hung their food over a food bag chain that was provided by the forest service in upper Yosemite years ago. Mama bear sent her two cubs up either of the two trees that had branches that the chain was attached to. They sat on the on the branches to weigh them down, and the mother bear went below to grab the food sacks.

My family was camping in Yellowstone around 1959. They had in ground garbage cans, I watched a bear with cubs take a grocery bag of food off of the back of a station wagon, my father throw dirt clods to get her to drop it. She walked on her hind legs to a garbage can, stepped on the foot operated opener, dropped in the bag and ran off. I assume she had seen enough to think people wouldn’t want it after that. I did see bears open those lids to rummage through the garbage after that. They learn quickly.
No one at that time had a issue with feeding the bears. I am happy that it’s illegal now.
