Canon is planning on releasing a crop sensor EOS R in 2021. Does this Canon rumor spell the death for the EF-M mount? How does this effect the ordinary filmmaker?

Thanks for the update. I preordered the 1DX Mark III from B&H the day it was announced. I cancelled that order yesterday. I am currently using the EOS R, so I think I will wait to see what Canon releases that will provide me with better wildlife photography features. (Faster than the current EOS R).

A crop sensor R series camera makes the most sense. This way you would be able to use all of your EF, EF-S, EF-M lenses along with native R mount lenses.

The EOS M system has one thing that none of the others has, with the kit lens it is small enough to fit in a jacket pocket, I bought an M kit with EF adaptor and later an M50 body, it is a pretty versatile setup for travel, pocketable for travelling and adaptable to all EF and EFs lenses, a good space-saver for carry on baggage, I've never bothered with any of the other EF M lenses, I think the system, though, was maybe an experiment, Canon came from a one mount system, it makes sense to go back there... Nikon has a similar problem now, too, although just two mounts.
When the RF system was introduced, I thought that maybe the eventual end of the M, that is maybe a little bit of a shame as the M is such a good pocket-size camera with a lot of punch.
Personally, I think that APS-C was a necessary development to bring sensor cost and, therefore, camera cost down to mass marketable prices and while it is now well established, the need for it is diminished, I think that an APS-C RF camera is a distinct possibility to return to a single mount system and while they have real benefits for long lens shooters I can see a future where they fade away to a fair degree, other than for entry-level cameras...
I, however, have never really embraced EF M or EF-s as viable purchases because of their limited future use as neither are compatible with FF DSLR bodies (and only partly compatible with FF RF bodies) and therefore I only have one of each.

Would a RF to MFT adapter work, for a BMPCC4k? For Owners of the EOS R, looking to add a BM 4k, and being able to use stabilized RF glass on both systems would be ideal, instead of having to buy older EF glass

On your lens adaption EF lens EF-s mount also works fine.

Only good reason would be option to use kit lens and have a super small and affordable setup while adding EF glass and building collection before going to full frame. Same concept someone would with with an APSC DSLR, just an adapter involved.

I agree with you that EOS M probably is a dead end. But going from APS-C to full frame is a problem for others too. I own a Sony a6500 and 5 of my lenses are almost useless on full frame. On an A7iii I will end up with 10 mp i crop mode.

There is something you’re not considering in all this equation: the M50 is the single Canon’s best seller. Size still has a place in the market. If Canon manages to put in the market an M50 with ibis, it would be a content’s creator dream. M lenses could be better, yes, but they’re are very good and certainly good enough for most users, specially that new breed of social media natives that want more that what their smartphones give them. Canon could use the M (mobile) mount to design a user super friendly ILC cam with androidlike features and apps, and create a new breed going mobile: just like mobile phones developers focus on their camera capabilities as their main feature in each new model, Canon could focus on the usability and connectivity of the M going forward to meet smartphone capabilities.

These companies have to consider that cheap cameras for the regular consumer are dying out to new smart phone camera tech. Just look at the Huawei P30 pro. Amazing camera tech. I see people buy a $120.00 point and shoot camera just to put it in the drawer and forget about it because their new cell phone is easier and always with them. You are correct to assume Canon should make one mount (RF) and build every camera to use it. Smart! Sony makes some aps-c lenses for their 6000 series cameras but they can also use their FE mount glass. Also smart! The aps-c lens in my opinion is only necessary for covert carry like into 3rd world countries where size and weight constraints demand small form factor. Other than that go full mount glass or go home. Canon has the finest lens selection available and it looks to be that way for a long time to come.

I look at a lot of reviews by Jared Polin and Tony. I’ve seen your last 2 and am liking your views based on facts and historical knowledge. 👍

I don't understand that Canon need a mirrorless full frame that's cheaper than EOS RP. Canon is famous for making cheap DSLR but none of them are full frame.

but but if canon does like Nikon, then the apsc canon cameras using full frame lens would get less sharp image as I have heard from someone with many many subscribers LOLL.
though I wouldnt mind canon also using one mount like Nikon they would / should still make small portable lens as options.

all good that you report the news and have discussions, nikon/fuji gotta/gonna release something soon, keeping you busy haha.
