Canon EOS R is supposed to be the Canon EOS REVOLUTION, but when shooting in 4K it crops the sensor. Does this mean Canon has Failed us again?

Thank you, Carlos. I always enjoy your channel from Japan. If you will have a opportunity to come to Japan, let me help you. Cheers.

I'm sorry. They could have easily done full frame 4k with super 35 crop option (like sony). Having to use a adapter to use crop lenses is a inconvenience. Sony allows you to use their crop lenses on a full frame without a adapter. 10bit is great but that's the norm for all upcoming mirrorrless. No IBIS is also extremely disappointing as just about every other camera is offering it. 720p 120 frames is laughable at best. From a photographers stand point it gets even worse with its lack luster FPS when on continuous auto focus. The articulating screen is awesome, the build seems impeccable as it Is a canon after all, ergonomics also seem stellar. I really wanted to get one to use alongside my a7r3. Guess I will be waiting to see what the a7s3 and upcoming Panasonic full frame will look like. Fuji does look amazing as well.

Probably the only level headed look about this camera. You the man!

The crop really makes sense to me, as it opens the door to using an adapter and EF-S lenses. That's a whole lot of awesome lenses at affordable prices (e.g. 10-18mm and 17-55mm). The 10-bit HDMI out is awesome too.

Thank you Carlos for talking some sense into us today.

Is it safe to assume matching the C200 with the EOS R will be similar to matching with the 5d IV with CLog? I own the C200, and used to own the 5d IV (both overlapping, so I had the chance to run some comparisons). I didn't keep the 5d, because it was hard to match the sharpness and Canon Log with Canon Log 2 or 3. The DR was noticeably less, where the highlights blew out rather quickly, without a smooth roll off. The EOS R is adding 10 bit and uncompressed HDMI out, but I never felt those were what the image needed to bring out more quality (similarly, the 8 bit on the C200 is actually quite nice).

I agree with what you've said about this camera being a great choice for many-- I just seemed to be less excited than you, and wanted to throw out where I'm coming from, in case you saw any flaws in my thought process when it comes to video. Thanks!

I 💯% agree. It’s mind blowing to me to watch people expect 1DX2 features for a third of the price. Bottom line is this is the cheapest way ever to get: flip screen, 4K, canon color, 10bit 422 in a full frame. Besides I think the camera body is beautiful. Not over done, has some character and it’s not boring. Still funny that people expect a c200 like camera for $2300. It’s a mirrorless 5d4 with free pre-installed c-log (no shipping the camera to canon) a flip out screen and better codec for $1000 less than I paid for my 5d4. Only thing I’m wondering is if my Ronin - s will be able to handle the 3 pound lens all in the front 🤣

The video is beautifully lit. Very very sophisticated.

I do not know if this is possible but at this point it may be a good idea to give the 5D4 a breath of fresh air by giving it a firmware update that allows it to record video in 4K 60pfs and 1080 120fps...why not? The camera is already two years old and its sales are probably pretty slow by now. By giving new capabilities it may just entice people to buy them. I have one and I like it a lot, but for its price, I would have appreciated those upgrades.

Damn dude I thought you were like one of those Canon Spokesperson of Light but you kept it real.

Great insight Carlos, I was a little underwhelmed overall, lots if additional things that perhaps should have been on the 5d4 are great like 4K HDMI 10 bit, Mpeg 4K codec, focus peaking, cLOG from factory, but missing a few things that would have truly set it apart - I suspect that will come, in the next EOS R which I reckon will be the 1dx mk ii equivalent of the EOS R System. Definitely makes a compelling choice as a B or C camera to the Cinema line or even a little brother (big brother?) to the 5D4.

I just purchased an RP with the RF 50mm 1.2. Spent 5.5K taxes in. My jaw dropped when i saw the cropping factor with 4K. I have a 14 days window to exchange my kit. I'm thinking to go with sony A7III with the sony 50mm f1.4. To me, the big point about 4K you are missing is that i want video i'm taking TODAY to look as good as possible in 20 - 30 years from now. Having 3 child today, i want them to be able to enjoy our videos souvenirs. I understand your point of view, i'm sad i have to move away from canon. I can live with the 24 FPS, but i can't deal with that crop factor... ( thanks for your video ! )

Excellent discussion Carlos and I 100% agree with your sentiment.
There is a world of difference between 'Youtubers' who drone on about supposed must have features and genuine content creators. You can create good content with most systems if you have the talent.

Get exactly what you’re saying, and totally agree. We’ve got a couple more bodies arriving haven’t we though?

Anyway, I’m sticking with the 5dmk4 and that is that.

Totally agree. The processing to down sample the full frame image would push the price up and no doubt cause other issues such as heat management. I'd rather have a good instead of a fudged product

Just to give you a slightly different perspective from someone who primarily uses these cameras for wildlife/bird photography and videography. I've always been a Canon user. Been using their cameras for over 20 years and have a huge investment in their glass.

With regards to the R camera, the crop factor in 4k is actually a plus, giving me greater "reach" to bring in subjects that I cannot walk up to. I can even live with one card slot if I have to. I love the articulating screen for shooting wildlife from my car window, I can tilt the camera/lens in all directions. I love that it has 4:2:2 with C-LOG. But no 120 fps HD? No 60fps 4k? Slow-motion is a must for me. No IBIS? IBIS is incredible when combined with a lens with IS. I can shoot with the wind blowing and no vibration at all. It is so smooth. I can rest my camera on my car window with a bean bag and no vibration. But the camera doesn't have IBIS. That is really disappointing. All of their competitors have this and for good reason. Once you have it, you'll never want to go back.

Secondly, only 5 fps with autofocus is too slow for wildlife photography. You need 10 fps or more to really be sure you won't miss the exact moment an eagle grabs a fish or get that shot in which a duck's wings are extended perfectly.

Canon consistently leaves features out of cameras. This is the game they play. What about your C200? It's either RAW or an 8-bit codec? REALLY? Typical Canon.

It won't be long before Sony announces their new A7S III and who knows what else. It won't be long before Panasonic introduces their FF camera. FujiFilm just announced their newest camera with 60p and 4:2:2 10-bit. You can bet there will be a slew of cameras offering a lot more in video capabilities at a lower price-point. If I were just starting out, Canon would not be my first choice. There are many other options more appealing at a lower price-point.

Finally, what really would be refreshing from Canon would be quit being so tight-vested and give a roadmap of where they plan to go with their mirrorless cameras. IMO, they need to do this to stop the exodus from Canon.

As always, I appreciate your views Carlos and always look forward to your videos.
