America: "How's the food?"

Japan: "You dog"

In my country you are supposed to bring your mouth to the dish not vice versa.
Interesting that it is considered bad table manners in other countries

Nvm forget going to Japan, there's wayyy too many rules and I don't want to seem impolite while being clueless.

If I ever visit Japan I need to remind myself to eat alone in a room. 💀 I don't wanna disrespect the culture or offend the people around me-

So funny story I have of this. My friend is Japanese/Australian, parents are Japanese but she is born here in Australia. Well she took me to one of her favourite Japanese restaurants, I was leaning Japanese manners and customs from her and I had raised my bowl but she didn't. Now a lady had come over to our table a proceeds to scold my friend about this and how "A white boy knows more than your disgraceful face", my friend then lifts her right arm showing that she is missing her hand and wrist. I looked down because I know how self conscious she is about it (do not worry I have her permission to post this) but she said "If you plan on disrespecting someone maybe get to know them first, because a simple conversation would have cleared this up, but no you had to be an obnoxious loud mouth, now piss off!" We enjoyed the rest of our meal in peace, except me burning my mouth on my tea and her laughing at me, i felt so embarrassed but seeing her smile after what happened was amazing ☺️

I was taught
No elbows on the table
And to leave the plate on the table

So the opposite lol

The one thing that gets me about Japanese table manners is that not holding a bowl makes you a “dog” but slurping noodles like a pig is perfectly acceptable.

I'm from Korea and my mom would yell at me for holding my rice bowl saying I'm eating like a hobo that cannot afford a table

Everyone's talking about their cultures and stuff but I just eat how I feel comfortable

I enjoy learning cultural etiquette such as this. I also enjoyed hearing that phrase: It is funny! Thank you for the demonstration.
