Woodturning (Ep. 4) - Shuo Sugi Ban Squiggle Vase

This week I take a nice piece of Cedar a pal of mine brought to me from his property, and turn it into a vase. I finished it using a traditional Japanese method known as Shuo Sugi Ban, where you use flame to burn the outside of the piece. I do not show it in the video, but in addition to applying oil based polyurethane to the vase, I applied linseed oil and beeswax as well to give the piece a nice, natural feel.

Very different indeed, not sure what I think, I don't dislike it for sure, I just think and feel it's missing something but can't place it. Thanks for sharing.

I am fairly certain it is spelled 'Shou Sugi Ban'. I think it was smart to stop shaping the piece after you burned it. It is the char ridges that give shou sugi ban its character. Liked.
