CAR VS TRUCK – CRASH TEST Semi Trailer Side Underride

Crash test car vs semi trailer truck

IIHS ran two 35-mph crash tests : one with an AngelWing side underride protection device from Airflow Deflector Inc. and a second test with a fiberglass side skirt intended to improve aerodynamics, not to prevent underride. The results were dramatically different. In both tests, a midsize car struck the center of a 53-foot-long dry van trailer. In the AngelWing test, the underride guard bent but didn’t allow the car to go underneath the trailer, so the car’s airbags and safety belt could properly restrain the test dummy in the driver seat. In the second test with no underride guard for protection, the car ran into the trailer and kept going. The impact sheared off part of the roof, and the sedan became wedged beneath the trailer. In a real-world crash like this, any occupants in the car would likely sustain fatal injuries.

Moral of the story, don’t drive under a semi trailer.

As a truck driver with 14yrs of experience, I'll be happy to inform the public that the fiberglass skirts on semi trailers is for fuel economy/aerodynamic purposes only. Side impact protection would be a nice addition to all trailers but I doubt I'll see it regularly.

The first crash could've been prevented if the driver wasn't such a dummy.

I’m guessing all these cars end up on Craigslist as slightly used

I'm a pretty big fan of not getting decapitated!

They should put a sticker on the side of the truck

In Europe side impact guards are mandatory on trucks. I find it really strange that this is not the case in he otherwise safety conscious USA. This setup is very dangerous for passenger car drivers. Also the autonomous emergency braking in newer cars might not “see” the truck until it is too late.

I've watched lots of these vehicle crash test videos and never knew where the car was coming from. Thanks to this video I now know that there's a long acceleration tunnel that it comes from. Also, why they decided to crash a car into the side of a trailer with air deflectors installed is beyond me. They're not designed to provide any protection for vehicles striking them, unless of course your vehicle is made of air.

Don't you love how trucks are at the perfect height for decapitation?

From a pure liability standpoint every company that has semis should install these on their fleet. It may cost 10-20K extra per trailer, but one lawsuit can run into into the millions of dollars in legal fees, lost time, and bad press even if you win. Also the greatly reduced insurance premiums would probably pay for itself in the life of the rig.

Trailers need more of this armor to save lives

I’ve actually seen a car accident where this happened. FYI I didn’t see the body it was draped over with white sheets however there was blood on the sheets from when the wind making the sheets wave in the interior it was a fatality for sure cause the freeway was shut down. I have a huge respect for first responders go firemen / medics!

Thanks so much for testing the Chevy! I have one and almost crashed it like that the other day, now I know to be careful

Fun Fact: That fiberglass design isn't meant to stop a 35 MPH side impact like that. It's supposed to prevent cars traveling alongside the trailer from getting stuck underneath it. it's not poorly designed, they're just testing it for something it wasn't designed to handle.
