you played with David Freese. That's awesome. I'm a huge Cardinals fan. On a side note, in 2006 I sold snow cones at the Salem-Keizer ballpark.

This reminds me of a video arcade where there are no quarters and you pay by the hour - adding the clock doesn't seem like it changes the strategy much, but it does.

The lack of clocks used to be one of the things that made baseball better than football.

Watching the telecast, it appeared Valdez really missed his location (but got a strike anyway as Pages swung and missed). So, he was just walking around and seemed surprised when the batter was called out.

Go Ems! That's for dredging up your memories of playing for the Emeralds. They were playing in rattly old Civic Stadium when we attended; I liked the park but I'm sure it was nasty for the players. That was a smart play, using the clock like that.

I would really like to see the opposite of this where pages is set at 8 seconds and valdez is just walking around for the last 8 seconds. He just keeps walking around the mound to make it 3-2 after only throwing 2 pitches.

So many comments about changing the rule... the rule is clear and there are no gaps in it. The batter must be ready at 8 seconds and the pitcher must pitch by 0 seconds. Had the batter been in the box and ready, then the pitcher would be under the gun to deliver the pitch or give up a ball... batter got tricked, but that is on him. Like back when we saw that stupid run down between 1st base and home plate... all the 1st baseman had to do was step on 1st base, but he got confused and wanted to tag the runner... cost them a run and the game. Sometimes players just get confused and all sense goes out the window, it happens and they are embarrassed... no rules need to change....

"Spirit of the rule" discussions incoming.

Seen this a few times now.
Hits need to learn that what the pitcher is doing doesn't matter. Be ready to hit a 8 seconds.
The problem is that hitter and pitcher seem to have this stand off where niether wants to get set first

Nestor Cortez seems likely to try this out.

Our local Single A team won a game earlier this season when the batter lost the pitch clock on an 0-2 count with 2 outs. D'oh!

The count was 0-2 the pitch was going to give him a "free" ball by violating the pitch clock to collect himself, but instead he got a 2 pitch strikeout.

why dont they just make the rule that the pitcher can throw anytime he wants below the 8 second mark whether the batter is ready or not?

I know this has nothing to do with the video but when you played pro ball back than can you make a video of your training schedule and how you trained thanks!

That's a smart use of the rule as written by Valdez. Should the rule be changed so that if the pitcher isn't on the mound at the eight-second mark, the hitter also doesn't have to be? Interesting point of discussion. But as things stand, the rule as currently written doesn't specify that, so the umpire's call is technically correct -- the best kind of correct.

Votto style. Stay in the box and ready between pitches if you don't have any other reason to move.

I do not like this as a baseball fan, this is frustrating for hitters.

The pitch clock is an abomination, as is almost everything Rob Manfred has forced upon us. If I pay for tickets, drive to the ball park, pay for parking, find my seat, buy a hot dog and a beer and some peanuts, *I don't want the game to be over sooner!*

Manfred is pandering to the casual fan, and ignoring the wishes of the lifelong baseball lover!

No this shit is dumb. I will not watch baseball this way. It's semantics. Coming from someone who has been to multiple world series and over 100 ballgames. The state of baseball is a joke.

How does this get documented on a scorecard? Its strike 3, therefire a K, but its not a "looking" or "swinging" strikeout, so its not a forward or backward 'K'. Also pitchers pitchcount not affected.
