Most sensible people didn't believe the Earth was flat! Columbus had errors in his calculation, but they thought that Asia was simply much more massive and he'd reach it eventually through this great sea. XD
Even the ancient greeks knew from measuring shadows that the earth was a spheroid. This knowledge was not lost upon those of the middle ages. The biggest "superstition" they would've held would be geocentrism, or the idea that the heavens revolve around the earth (whilst heliocentristm, which is commonly and rightfully accepted now, is the idea that the earth rotates around the heavens, in our case, the sun).
