Silliness, pure silliness, Ned would never have been allowed to just ride away, he had lieutenants and vassal lords who just would not have allowed it. Imagine Ned’s battle commanders going to Robert telling him, we just let him ride off with six other lords to get killed somewhere, they would get beheaded. All the others who rode with him also had responsibilities and underlings, he would have shown up with dozens of knights and archers and free riders, befitting Robert’s second in command, Dayne would have been killed by archers along with the rest. Ned would have gone into the tower in force because he did not know what or who was in there.
