Bastet is an ancient Egyptian goddess, often depicted as a lioness or a domestic cat. She is known as the goddess of home, fertility, and childbirth, as well as the protector of the pharaoh. She was also the goddess of warfare in Lower Egypt, the Nile River delta region, before the unification of the cultures of ancient Egypt.

Bastet was a very popular deity and had a large cult following, particularly in the city of Bubastis in the eastern Delta. Bubastis was known to host grand festivals in her honor. Her symbols include the lioness, the cat, the sistrum (a type of musical instrument), and a canopic jar adorned with a lioness head.
