It’s called Basilosaurus because scientists originally thought the fossil belonged to a lizard. Some attempts were made to change the name after realizing their mistake but nomenclature rules held firm. It’s now stuck with a name almost as unfortunate as a certain blind cave beetle.

There’s so much to find under the Sahara desert, I’m not sure if I’m happy or sad that we barely have the wherewithal to sustain big digs there - because for sure we’d cause problems but also I’m curious.
