Presented By: Peter Nagy, PhD

Speaker Biography: Nagy is a Professor in the Department of Plant Pathology, University of Kentucky. Dr. Nagy studies the functions of host proteins and lipids in viral RNA replication. The Nagy lab is using a small plant RNA virus and an animal virus and they have developed yeast as a model host for these studies. The Nagy lab has developed powerful cell-free assay capable of supporting full virus replication. The Nagy lab is doing pioneering research in the area of virus-host interactions. Dr. Nagy obtained his Ph.D. from the Institute for Plant Protection, Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Budapest, Hungary. Dr. Nagy did postdoc work at Northern Illinois University and University of Massachusetts prior to establishing his molecular virology lab at UKY. He is a recipient of several awards, including Thomas P. Cooper Research Award from APS. His research is supported by NSF, USDA and NIH.

Webinar: Virus Replication: The Role of the Unique Pathogenic Organelle

Webinar Abstract: Recent years have seen an explosion in our knowledge on the molecular interplay between viruses and their hosts. Plus-stranded RNA viruses, such as Sars-CoV-2 or Dengue virus, recruit cellular vesicles and co-opt cellular proteins involved in metabolism and lipid biosynthesis to build viral replicase complexes within the large viral replication organelles. We use tombusviruses (TBSV), which are small (+)RNA viruses, as model plant viruses to study virus replication, recombination, and virus - host interactions using yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) surrogate host. Several systematic genome-wide screens and global proteomics and lipidomics approaches have led to the identification of ~500 host proteins/genes that are implicated in TBSV replication. We characterized the role of ~100 co-opted host proteins, sterols and phospholipids in tombusvirus replication organelle biogenesis.
