Rocket and Groot accompany Thor to Nidavellir, where they and Eitri create a battle-axe Stormbreaker.

Did Rocket Raccoon really just decide to abandon the Guardians and go with Thor just to check out Nidavellir and its weapons? It was deeper than just wanting to go and see the legendary Nidavellir. After Groot was cloned and this new Groot formed, Rocket became his father in a way. This is actually confirmed by James Gunn, who has noted that Groot’s last words in Infinity War were ‘dad’ when he was looking Rocket. Groot joins Thor into going to Nidavellir

Rocket went with Thor, and brought Groot along, because he thought It was safer to be with Thor than the rest of the Guardians. When Quill tells Rocket that he knows he is only going with Thor to avoid Thanos, he is right. However, he is not avoiding Thanos out of self preservation, but in order to keep Groot safe. Of course, this fails to make any difference, but It is wise to recognize Thor’s superiorty over the rest of the Guardians, which includes Drax, who screws things up constantly. Regardless though, Rocket made the right move as a Father to Groot.

Quill: Don't you think that we should all have a weapon like that?
Thor: No. You simply lack the strength to wield them.
Your bodies would crumble as your minds collapsed into madness.
Gamora: If we don't go to Knowhere and Thanos retrieves another stone... he'll be too powerful to stop.
Rocket: I got it figured out. We got two ships and a large assortment of morons. So me and Groot will go with the pirate angel here.
And the morons will go to Knowhere to try to stop Thanos.
Rocket: Cool? Cool.
Thor: So cool.
Rocket: Come on, Groot. Put that game down. You'll rot your brain.

This is one of the best scripted scenes in the entire MCU. The self-referential jokes, the timing, Hemsworth's perfect delivery, the subject-matter still managing to revolve around the end of the universe... it's PERFECT. Oh and "all words are made up". I swear I missed the second half of the movie because I was having an existential crisis after he said that.

What’s a great little thing of this scene is when Thor drops his weight when on some steps walking around you see the ship shakes and you hear the thud to show Thor’s weight. In the comics he’s really, really heavy so it’s cool they add that in
