Mega Man X8 16-Bit is a fan game that reimagines X8 if it was on the Super Nintendo. This is my review of it.

Coming here from Js.
Just wanted to say a fantastic review of the demake.

I agree with a lot of your views and i like the angel of what didn't work in x8.

I played X8 for what feels almost 20y ago now when I was 18.

I think the game felt simply to old event then for the current gen of games on PS2.

And as an resulte people just didn't play it.

Thanks to modern retro prodjelts I think classic X has a big part of the market if done right.

It inspired so many retro styled games that it almost feels weird Capcom didn't make a game such as this themselves.

13:16 There’s a way to fight more than two of the bosses here simultaneously.

Bro imagine if someone crazy bastard ported the demake level designs to base X8

I played this game myself recently and I absolutely loved it. So much to love in it. The revamped weapons are all fantastic to use, all of them have use which I wish I could say for more Megaman games, especially the X games. The armors are fantastic, I'm seriously impressed how well balanced the two are. Genuinely none of the 4 pairs of parts feel like they have one part which is better than the other, with the exception of maybe the Head Parts, but even then, the jump attack is a lot better than you might expect. It's great because it creates so much replay value with all the different combinations, I feel like it'd be a lot of fun to just pick a combo you want to use for a playthrough and gun for it immediately to get as much out of it.

The stages are all great, almost no complaints with it but one of the biggest surprises was the boss rush stage of all things being one of my favourites. The little mini levels to unlock each rematch are a fantastic touch and getting to fight two at a time as a reference to X Challenge is so cool, if not a little chaotic. Also the fact that you can get jumped by all 8 bosses at once if you know what to do is so stupid in the best ways I absolutely love it. Speaking of references, I love the small ZX reference with the New Gen reploids. The ones in the rematch do the little megamerge animation like they're using the DNA Cores like Biometals and even Lumine does it in his fight, which is such a really neat reference cause that's the exact same animation Ashe and Grey do when they use A-Trans, the same ability the New Gens inherited from Axl it's great.

Honestly my only real complaints are no Axl or Zero, though the dev had good reason for it, and the Seranade fight being kind of a piss take if I'm being honest. Like it's one thing to have hard bosses but jesus christ that one is just way too much. Red is cool though, he's tough but doesn't feel unfair even with no access to upgrades. He actually has a genuinely fun fight now, like that's sick. plus giving him X7 Sigma's theme was a great choice.

Axl got modded into the game now. The developer's discord has the link somewhere, I haven't gotten around to joining and grabbing a copy yet.

Since your level order is based on least backtracking, what do you recommend as a good "beginner" boss order?

Good video btw

the biggest acheivement here is the dev not only made a midling X game amazing but did it in such a ahort amount of time while SOLO that it makes other MMX fan projects look bad. *looks at corrupted going years now*

The demake straight up is my new favorite. It kinda feels like a proper end to the X series as is. Man nowadays you can play x3, 5, and 6 with so many improvements too so honesty the X series is in the best place its been imo.

Also my usual order is
Man o war
Trilobyte
Yeti
Rooster
Panda
Sunflower
Mantis
Antonion

Our boss order is basically the same but I swap Mantis with Trilobyte simply for the Icarus body armor. I haven't really messed with the Hermes body armor and this video has made me consider trying it out on my next playthrough. It was really exciting see our orders being basically the same as many of the orders I've seen online are a lil' inefficient and don't get the best parts immediately. Sure, getting the Hermes helmet and Icarus buster immediately may trivialize the game but I don't really care, the combo is so much fun and being able to utilize the dash a charged Thunder Dancer gives you without using up ammo is heavenly.

I beat both. I wouldnt say it fixes x8 because it strips it of a lot of elements like the Double Attack, , finding rare metals, Zeros weapons, partner system, etc. Its a good way to experience X8 but I wouldnt call it a replacement.

They made a mod of axl. I imagine they will also try with zero and struggle with him. Zero has always been a struggle in the 16 bit megaman x games. The closest they could get was making him playable like in megaman x3 but that's not how he's supposed to play.

They could have fixed a game that needed fixing. X8 was fine to me. I know the guy hates X7 and thats why he didnt do that one, but THATS the game that needs a fixin

I personally hop in and out if stages just to get the heart/sub tanks and the armours before getting into the boss fights.

X8 Demake solved the decades old MM formula by being a perfect sequel to X1 overall with ZERO fluff

While the OG X8 still has it's own selling points over the demake, it's very hard to go back to the original X8 for me now. After getting familiar with the new level layouts and implementing the new weapons, you can totally blitz thru levels in ways that no other X game manages to accomplish. The new elevator stage layout with all the tools the demake gives you is unironically the best level in the entire franchise.

The only complaint I really have is that some boss attacks really needed to be playtested better. There are SEVERAL effectively unavoidable attacks without the use of certain weapons or armor, which wouldn't be too much of an issue if it weren't for the existence of achievements which require you to fight bosses buster only/upgradeless/damageless. Not being able to reliably beat bosses that way outside of TAS pretty much kills any hope for an "all achievement" speedrun category and it's a bit of a shame really.
