Actually raining cats and dogs is old fashioned idioms instead use “ its pouring outside “

Ok. teenagers probably wouldn’t use ‘It’s raining cats and dogs’ but we (I’m 40) still use it in Derbyshire.

You should show us a list of examples of ancient idioms and modern ones in order to know which ones to use.

Our family uses the phase during my entire lifetime. If the storm is really bad, we add hyperbole such as hippos and elephants.

The rain coming down in buckets is not a recognised English idiom. The rain is bucketing down is however.

Nowhere it says somebody cannot use an old idiom. All idioms are “memorized” phrases anyway, whether new or old. Stop giving information which has no basis/proof in IELTS. If using idioms, try to use precise idioms depending on the situation along with using only a few of them naturally and flexibly.

This is another common mistake done by test candidates. Idiomatic expressions ruin the most important aspect in the IELTS speaking test which is accuracy.
