A lot of people have been asking why the octane rating in the US is so low compared to Europe. In the US we use a different rating system called "Anti Knock Index" while in Europe you have "Research Octane Number." 91 octane US is the equivalent of 95 octane EU. In the US, most gas stations offer 93 octane which would be about 97.4 in Europe.

I bought a 2008 5 series as my first car at 17. 75k miles, no accidents or big issues at all. Right now I'm at 80k, I've had the car for about 4 months with no issues. My advice if anyone is trying to buy a used BMW- be sure the previous owner(s) have detailed record of scheduled services, oil change etc. it's not worth the risk to buy one and realize there are issues later down the road. That being said, I would absolutely recommend a bmw as a first car if you can afford it.

I'm 19 now but I got my 2005 BMW X3 when I was 17 with 118k miles for $4, 000 at the auction. Insurance through my parents is about $165 a month, gas can get expensive last time I filled up gas was $3.36 for 93 in MA and cost a bit of change over $50 to fill up. Maintenance wise besides oil changes and tires I've had to replace 4-5 coil packs which are about $30 each. Currently at about 134k miles running strong. Also a 6 speed manual which is pretty rare people are always surprised.

Get your car insurance through your parents or family member.

Speaking from a 17 yr old who did buy a BMW for their first car it's expensive. I bought the exact same car Justin had but no the AWD version and mine had the M sport package. 140K mileage paid less than 6K and the car so far had been really unreliable. Had A bad DTML pump and a charcoal canister go bad in the first week spent $1000 on repairs and spent $110 on a breakfluid change now at the Indy shop I took it too discover I was leaking Power steering fluid, valve cover gasket leaking and oil pan gasket. I'm looking at about $1500 to fix it fully. So keep in mind they are expensive. My family has helped me so far cover the repairs since I'm still in school. I wish now I would have just bought a dealer BMW with low mileage

Avoid any cost for oil changes or brake replacement if you do things yourself and get the parts from FCP Euro. Free replacement for life! Even includes oil/filter and brake pads and rotors!

! My insurance went down when I bought a BMW - its considered a 'safer' car.

My “first car” was my moms 2011 Mercedes GL550 😂
I was 16, in 2012
She bought herself the 2013 GL 63 AMG at the time

When she passed it down, it had 10, 000 miles on it, but being a teenager I put 30, 000 in the same year, and kept it for 2 more years, in the end, I had 125, 000 miles,
Air suspension was out in all 4 corners along with the compressor, the 4MATIC electronics were going out and my power lift gate was sooo loud it could wake up the neighborhood
Maintenance would murder me and as soon as the transmission slipped once on me, my dad traded it in for a Yukon Denali and swore to never allow for our family to keep a Mercedes after the warranty ends 💀
and they handed me the keys to the 2002 Odyssey to get me through high school, best car I’ve ever had 😂
Im now 20 and I own a 2009 Odyssey 💀

Im 14 rn, and in almost 2 years from now, i'll be cleared to drive. My dad's first car was a Mustang he bought after getting his degree from LSU. 2001 mustang, black with a convertible roof. I still wish we had it because ohh man would I have loved it, but unfortunately he donated it to Kars for Kids in an attempt to help raise money for the Childrens Hospital. Im happy we helped out some kids, but i'll have to save up for my own car. Ive got almost 500$, after saving 4 a bit, and i'm trying to go german, most likely Audi or BMW. If not, maybe a Lexus or an Infinity. Here in CA, gas is soo expensive, and car prices are super high. Ugh, and taxes and etc, idk how i'm gonna afford one of those cars, but it's the goal.

In Europe, you cant even get below 90 octanes with fuel. Minimum is 95, better is 98 and a premium is a 100.
