This Hubble view shows all that remains from a massive star that died in a supernova blast.
The light from this stellar explosion would have reached Earth thousands of years ago! Our Sun and planets are constructed from similar debris of supernovae that exploded in the Milky Way billions of years ago.

Called N 49 or DEM L 190, this remnant is made up of material that will soon be recycled into a new generation of stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud. The LMC is a small companion galaxy to the Milky Way, visible from the Southern Hemisphere.
