Expert aesthetician Melanie Simon is perpetually radiant. She’s even made her appointment-only magic available for at-home use with her palm-size ZIIP Nano Current Skincare Device and brand-new, super-potent Serum C. In a recurring video series, the skin care guru doles out easy-to-follow advice about the best techniques, products, and routines for your complexion. This week, she tackles best practices for cleansing. the deceptively simple process of washing your face.

Washing one’s face is a task that seems like it should be fairly straightforward. Soap, water, washcloth, basta. But like most things in life, cleansing is deceptively complex. Before you roll your eyes, consider the variables: frequency, water temperature, lifestyle, makeup routine, etc. And that’s not even taking into account the various types of cleanser formulations. Milky, sudsy, oily, foamy, balmy—it’s like a complexion-obsessed tribe of dwarves.

Plus, cleansing is important. It’s your first line of defense against breakouts, and it preps your face to interact with everything else in your skin care routine. So what’s the best way to wash up? And what have we been doing wrong? Enter Melanie Simon. We posed our questions to the skin care guru and asked her to call out some of the most common cleansing mistakes. Watch above to learn Simon’s Rules of Cleansing. Life is complicated—washing your face shouldn’t be.

What about oil cleansing and double cleansing?

Im not sure if this is correct, but i think the warm water advice has to do with skin elasticity. Cold water keeps your pores tight and firm, which also helps minimizing wrinkles as well. My advice is to first wet your face with lukewarm water to open your pores, so that your cleanser can unclog your pores easily, since they are loosened with warm water. Then put on your favorite cleanser, and then wash it off with cold water, to close your pores up and firm your skin. Similar to how many hair stylists recommend rinsing your hair conditioner with cold water. Also, dont go too icy cold. Both extremes are not that great for your skin. I’d say a bit colder than your body temperature would be enough.

Really interesting ! I know this isn't about cleansing but I'm REALLY curious on Miss Melanie's thoughts about skincare for someone in their 20's? Thoughts on active ingredients for anti-aging in that age range? thoughts on acne prone skin that's sensitive? btw totally curious on Miss Melanie's ethnicity?! what a beautiful lady !

The Cerave Hydrating Cleanser is the closest thing to a milky cleanser that you can find at the drugstore, grocery store, or even on Amazon.
