You are correct that the decomposition process requires oxygen. This is why we should include wood sticks, branches, etc. as they allow some air to get in to the pile. When no air gets in, the compost pile becomes anaerobic and stinks.

So I just came from a video that waters their compost with SUGAR water. And I had such a mind-blow moment, since we add sugar to yeast as a way to feed it. WHY didn't I think of this before. WOW!
