I still think the writing here is impeccable. Joi can only seem to fix that he appears lonely, not that he is, thus implying an inherent acknowledgment of her not being real. It all compounds to show just how distraught K is by the end of it all, and how desperate the world has become: that it would rather maintain the appearance of happiness, than serve to achieve its true form.
