Prince, of course, is from Minneapolis - a city in the Midwest.

That grin when in Bowie's head is something like "aah there it is"

I love that look on his face 😂
He didn’t even have to ask the question, he just wanted to hear the attempt to justify.

Video ended too soon - Bowie keeps pushing after the cut, a true ally

His beaming smile as he got him to admit to just pandering to racists is so funny

How lovely to see someone in a position of power asking a question that really means something. It would be so easy to live in your own bubble.

MTV: we’re not racist, most of America is, so we have to be as well to appeal to everyone.
Bowie: 😏

I was a teen in the 80's in Mississippi at an all white private high school who was glued to MTV from DAY ONE - and I can tell you with the utmost certainty that neither I - nor ANY of my friends nor people I knew of - was "scared" of or refused to engage with the music of any artist of color, period. Never crossed my mind. Prince, Donna Summer, Sugar Hill Gang, Grace Jones and on and on, were all part of regular musical rotations. And Bowie's point was never anything I was cognisant of at the time - but I certainly see it now - and never realized this was the problem that it was. The main damning part of it all is that the CREATOR OF MTV WAS FROM MISSISSIPPI

Remember that in the UK back then, radio was not segregated along colour lines (age, yes, colour no), Black American artists were having occasional big chart hits and there was a huge influence on UK music from the Northern Soul scene, even the guitar gods were well in awe of Sister Rosetta Sharp before Hendrix hoped on a plane to London to get his solo career going.

Bowie in the 90s also described hiphop as the only genre pushing as many boundaries as it did

"That day Buttercup was amazed to discover that when he was saying “That's very interesting” what he meant was “what a load of bullshit” & even more amazing was the same day he realized it was completely true."

David Bowie had one of the best if not the best redemption arcs following the retirement of the Thin White Duke.

Bowie's total stillness whilst listening for the 'justification' is masterful and draws the guy deeper

If I ever became a prominent artist by some freak accident of the Internet, I would wish to embody the attitude Bowie exemplifies in this interview.

What a tap dance! Bowie called it out and watched him squirm. Truth!

Another reason why I love David Bowie. Calls out this racist BS.
