3900x could last u just as long as a 3950x, the money u save from purchasing a 3900x is best put towards a higher gpu or monitor...

It's amazing what they have achieved. When there are rummors about 16 core Ryzen, I was worried that it wiil run into the same memory bandwidth issue as the 2990wx because 16 core is too much for 2 channel memory. But instead we see perfect core scaling.

I’m a big fan of both of these CPU’s, thanks for the great comparison. If I need to do a build next year I’m planning on using one of these - it would be for a workstation with a Quadro RTX graphics card installed.

I get the 3900x because i do more gaming and less video editing so i will invest the money difference to the 3950x in a 280 aio cooler to get a more silent Performance. I’m waiting for a price drop next year on the 3950X to replace my 3700X, the 3700X will go into my 1700 box, and the 1700 can go into either a handmedown or media server off in the middle of nowhere. Thanks for doing the comparison, though. The 3900X is still a very value packed CPU at the $500 mark.

I got luckily my R9 3900X back in September 2019 and i just love that CPU, using it for video editing and even VMs with a dedicated GPU and it does everything like a champ.
Apparently, i made quite a smart decision to get it so earlier when looking at price and availability nowadays :/

My new rig consists of a 3900X on an Asus X570 Gaming F MOBO with an Asus RX5700XT OC. More than enough power for what I need when it comes to gaming and content creation. I am using liquid cooling for the 3900X and have a stable overclock of 4.3Ghz at 1.35V. I wanted to be cool and get the 16 core processor...because...more cores. But at the end of the day I am happy with my chip and your tests confirmed that it's a marginal difference in some cases between the 12 and 16 core, and the 3900X does have the value factor!

There I was thinking I'd have to save up for a few more months to grab an I9. AMD just saved me £2000, and earned themselves £700.

The lack of availability is an issue here. Both cpus are often sold out in hours. It is hard to even get one. AMD cannot keep up with the demand.
