Know it all college girl was crushed after I informed her the C.W. ended in June 1865. I read Admiral Waddell wasn't captured until 1866.

The Trans-Mississippi Department (CSA) was officially still in the fight until 6/2/1865- so Palmito Ranch was indeed the last land engagement of note.

They didn't have cellphones. Takes time for news to travel the full scope of the battlefield for all to stand down from active combat! Great video on our American history !

Little known fact is that that last battle of the War was won by Californians such as Col. Showalter who never surrendered, but just look at California now.

My great-great-great-grandfather Dillon M. Cox was the sergeant of the 34th Regiment, Indiana Infantry, Company F during that battle. I have a picture of him in his regular blue Union uniform as a corporal that sits on my bookshelf. That was before they switched over to the suave uniforms which is what they were wearing during the Battle of Palmito Ranch.

Great stuff thanks. Thought you would do a video for Patriots day when the red coats marched to Lexington Concord.

I am super proud of living here in the Rio Grande Valley and the opportunity to grow up visiting this battlefield among others here in our little slice of heaven known as the Rio Grande Valley. Thank you for proving this informative video.

The Civil War did not come to an end at Appomattox. Lee only surrendered the Army of Northern Virginia. The official ending of the War occurred when General Joseph Johnston surrendered the Confederacy to Sherman at the Bennet House in Durham NC on April 17th, 1865. While certainly there may have been small skirmishes here or there, the Battle of Bentonville in North Carolina (March 19-21), pitting Johnston against Sherman, was the last full-scale action of the Civil War in which a Confederate army was able to mount a tactical offensive. This major battle, the largest ever fought in North Carolina, was the only significant attempt to defeat the large Union army of Gen. William T. Sherman during its march through the Carolinas in the spring of 1865. Less than a month later, General Joseph Johnston, realizing that Lee had surrendered his army at Appomattox April 9th, formally surrendered the Confederacy to General William T Sherman at the Bennet House in Durham NC, April 17th, 1865.

Imagine after a war that tore apart a nation, there was a reconciliation. The courage for a nation to forget the sins of a whole nation and then repair itself through reunification. Somehow this should make the whole nation rethink what's going on now. No way a president can be captured and a whole government shut down then a country be unified under the right president. That can't happen today in 2021, right...right?

The "competitive spirit" of humanity will tell you that "unconditional surrender" is a delusion of grandeur temporarily (?) enjoyed by the victor. This is a chivalrous fossil of yesteryear actually not a psychological option in America although people will die trying to prove otherwise. Re Appomattox not Palmito. ("Now let's just ease that finger off the trigger, Comrade." Reagan to Gorbachev? 😆)
