I have a great system for 4.5" grinders. When Harbor Freight (the famous USA Chinese junk outlet) has a sale on them for $9.95 or even $10.95 we always buy a couple of them and stick them in the shop cabinets. I have them hanging all over my little shop and have them with every cutting and brush I use.
They fail just like yours did only it is usually 6" away from the grinder. When one quits, I simply break out a new one and put the one that quit in a big box in the corner. When I get bored and have nothing else to do, I fix them, which is almost always the cord. Mine all have guards on them because I value the skin on my hand.
My friend calls them "Hand Grenade Grinders" If the things do die you just throw them in the trash barrel and figure it died a well-used death. I cannot see paying over $100 for a grinder when these do the job. I am still corded to the wall socket because their batteries never go dead when you need them.

Well done, you put money back in your pocket. I always enjoy doing that.

A bit of general maintenance on grinders really does help them live a lot longer. Another great topic for a Wednesday catchup as it’s another one of those things that affects us all.

Interesting how the wiring differs, here stateside, compared to yours. I use red tacky grease, when I rebuild, only because I have it. I don’t know where they get the grease from when they make the tools, but boy it stinks and isn’t worth a beavers butt. I wash out the old gunk, but it is not an easy task. Glad to see you taking care of your tools, rather than just yanking them into the trash bin.

They used to teach us how to put on a 3 pin plug at school, they don't do it now. They should teach more life skills at school again, never forgot how to fit plugs, change fuses and this time of year looking for the broken bulb in christmas lights lol

Removing guards of grinders is a pet hate of mine.. the only one i don't have one on is a dedicated variable speed with a sanding pad fitted

My trick with an unknown break position is to disconnect the cable and pull on the copper.
Then I known exactly how far In that the break is. 😉

A multimeter can test for continuity but it can't tell you exactly where the break is in the wire. A quick wiggle does the same job and can more accurately pinpoint how far down the break is in wire if you don't want to replace it all.

I have a scar on the inside of my wrist to remind me how dangerous grinders can be. I had welding gauntlets on, the disc went through that and into my wrist. Clumsy prat, was lucky I don’t hit an artery.

If you have a MIG welder, you will have an angle grinder!
