The board is less complex compared to the modern console controllers, it has MORE buttons and features. Accelerometer, analog and digital triggers that are separate inputs, modifier keys, etc, while still costing 10 USD less than the PS4/XBOne controllers.
Valve did something right.

So basically a mouse and a Wii Nunchuck.

The thing is, the steam controller is not meant to get a PC gamer into the living room. It's meant to allow a PC gamer to play games if he's already in the living room. And it's really good for that. Having a mouse and keyboard is usually a lot better than having a steam controller.

That said, your design is awesome! I mean, the mouse part was kind of whatever (Just put magnets in a normal mouse?), but the "d-pad" idea is really cool. It's like an inverted joystick.

Man, @ 18:10 Ben went full double rainbow on that hot glue gun!

BEN THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT I NEEDED! And you're right, the steam controller was not made for getting PC gamers on the couch, but to get Cosole Gamers to the PC.

I used WiiJoy + Enjoyable to map a Wiimote with a Classic Controller to my Macbook Pro. So I could use the D-Pad for movement, the triggers, and the left analog with my left hand. Then I used a standard wireless mouse for percision control in my right hand. I actually used the right side of my right leg for this. It was clunky, non-percise, and Enjoyable didn't play nice with the mouse.

I love the Steam Controller to bits, I think it's the future of gaming, but no controller will make me switch to a console. I may as well just put a computer in my living room. Oh look, we have the Steam Link!

8:09 "I'm not sure what these big ground planes are for" - on an assembled steam controller, those gold squares are visible when the battery door is taken off - the soldermask is pulled back in those areas for ESD protection :-)

It can be pretty hard to come up with a custom controller that could replace a standard controller, because you need, in addition to two analog sticks (or equivalent), also 2 analog triggers and 12 buttons (d-pad, ABXY, 2 bumpers, start and select). Many games use all of them.

So you made an Mause and Wii-Nunchuck gamepad....

Why do every one thing PC gamers do not have the option to game in the living room. Console gamers are so brainwashed.

I think Valve have made a few more than just 4 games tbh

I just had the weirdest idea for a mod for the Steam Controller: have the left touchpad work the same as usual when you touch it with your thumb, but when you place that thumb disk on it, it becomes the analog input like in the video.

"We can use magnets!" I cracked up at that one.

Cool project, but why not just put magnets in the mouse? could save a lot of time ;)
