A 39 Year old Alex Ovechkin & The Washington Capitals are off to a hot start. And with Ovechkin closing in on Wayne Gretzky's all time goals record, we take a deeper look into his game & if The Great 8 will reach that incredible achievement this season.

The 2004-05 lockout
The 2012-13 half season lockout
COVID cutting the 2019-20 season short by 13 games
The COVID bubble season only being 56 games.

That's 155 games lost for reasons beyond his control. Given his .598 career Goals Per Game, he'd have 93 more goals and would've passed Gretzky a year or two ago

It’s actually crazy how much better the Caps look as a team. I genuinely thought last year was the end of them being in the playoff window during the Ovi era, but it seems it’s just wide open again.

They’re faster, more aggressive and seemingly have the scoring depth they’ve been needing for so long while also getting Ovi who’s putting up ungodly numbers for a guy who’s coming up on 40 years old lol.

NYR fan perspective...Ovi been my favorite player in the entire league since he started his NHL career. Guy is a damn unicorn given the size, speed, skill, age, etc. Could argue he is the definition of what a modern power forward should be and clearly an effective leader on the team on top of everything else.

Very impressed with his game at 39 and the Caps game as a whole to start this season. They are fun to watch. Selfishly I hope Ovi breaks the record on the road in a Canadian market just to twist the knife in a bit further to these insane fans north of the border. This isn't their game exclusively anymore and it will be fantastic to see a European take the record, at least until the next goal scoring unicorn comes along to challenge the new mark.

Speaking of tiers, it brings a tear to my eye because one thing about Ovy is that *he truly loves hockey* and is a pure competitor. He's always found joy in being on the ice. Don't forget that last year his father passed away and was sick for a while, which I'm assuming took his attention for a lot of last season. I'm grateful to have been able to witness Alexander the Great - The Great 8. He will always be my favourite player. Remember, if your folks are still around, consider giving them a call.

Washington is my second team and it has been a pleasure going to the games and watching ovi do what he does, it will be a sad day when he retires.

I love this guy. My parents have been caps fans since 1990, Im so thankful to them for taking me to go see him a few times a year in person preform magic and getting to meet Ovechkin at a convention when I was 7 in ‘07, getting a picture with him and some things singed. By the end of his contract he'll have between 900 and 950 goals, had it not been for the lockout and covid he'd have 1000 by the end of his career. The most efficient goal scorer of all time regardless

Man carbery is such a good coach. He saw that the first line needed a change after the devils game and without delay he changed it immediately. Putting a guy like protas who’s relatively unproven but has a unique skill set to play on the top line is risky but it has worked perfectly.

I've always loved hockey, played it for a long time, but really didn't understand how much thinking goes on in these player's heads. As with all high level professional athletes, I am awed by the discipline and creativity players like Ovechkin display. Amazing stuff.

I read one of the reasons for Ovechkin slow start last season is his father passed away in the off-season, which must’ve really affected his gameplay
