Math can help uncover cancer's secrets | Irina Kareva

Irina Kareva translates biology into mathematics and vice versa. She writes mathematical models that describe the dynamics of cancer, with the goal of developing new drugs that target tumors. "The power and beauty of mathematical modeling lies in the fact that it makes you formalize, in a very rigorous way, what we think we know," Kareva says. "It can help guide us to where we should keep looking, and where there may be a dead end." It all comes down to asking the right question and translating it to the right equation, and back.

In my opinion, there is no greater pleaser than attractive people teaching amazing concepts.

Although her message was very trivial, since Math is defined as language and tool of science, i couldn't help but feel inspired by her. As a math (applied math to mechanical engineering) student, this is the first time i have heard someone from the modern applied math field talking about her researches.

Thank you madam.

Mathematics is always applied.. It's the best way to quantify our assumptions, , , it helps to practically calculate the level of correlation between different factors in a system... This was a very fine video explaining that..!!!! I appreciate it!! 👏👏👏

This was brilliant and eye-opening. Thank you so much. This inspires me to imagine working in this field in the future. I'm a Computer Science Under Grad Student and I believe Algorithmic thinking is beneficial in this field, and hope to contribute to this one day!

The link between physics and mathematics is so obvious, even some of the trolls responding here are vaguely aware of it. Hopefully this short video will excite budding mathematicians with little interest in studying physic to realize the study of math can result in an ability to help humanity in other fields as well. Well done Irina, thank you!

So, from biomimicking we make assumptions and it is applied to simulations of much serious and relevant issues to observe the outcomes until we get the right ones, by making changes to our assumptions, over and over again.

Oh dear lord. She gets excited by maths. You can see it in her face. It doesn't get any hotter than this.

Math for the win. Usually I wait to watch these, but my love is math. So, I have to watch this now. Yay math! Okay, sorry; I’m just excited.

Very good. I hope with the development of quantum computing, we will be able to test the most important treatments available. Thank you

Meanwhile I'm just wondering when I'll see a video with a title that doesn't sound like clickbait
